About George Wilson Dickey

"George was involved in the Citizens Aid organization during World War I.

A lover of music, George was 'known to have attended dances until he became a Christian.' George became a member of the Methodist faith and served as Superintendent of several Sunday School departments. He worked with 'the young people,' utilizing their talents for the church choir, which he also directed. He was President of the South Side Singing Convention at one time.

The 1883 tax records of Williamson County, Texas show George as owning 1 horse woth $50. The 1900 census of Texas lists George as living in George West, Texas on Main Street. Alice, his wife, was born in Illinois according to the census while their daughter, Lillie Pearl is shown as being born August of 1881 in Missouri.

George had been a foreman at different times for two ranches in south Texas. In order for his daughter to attend school, George moved to Georgetown, Texas. In latter age, George's health began to fail and as therapy he and his wife traveled throughout Texas in a covered wagon. He purchased land in Jones County, Texas living there for only one year. Following the sale of this land, George purchased more land in Floyd County, in conjunction with a friend. After improving the land George sold it to retire. this is when he moved into Floydada, the county seat of Floyd County.

During his travels, George managed a hardware store in Robert Lee, Texas in Georgetown, the site of Georgetown University. While in Floydada, George occasionally helped a neighbor with branding their cattle. On one of those occasions, George was kindling the firest where the brands were made hot when, on the spot, he had a heart attack. This was on June 29, 1918; he was 58-years-old. He rests in a cemetery in Floydada.
