About George M. Reid

GEORGE M. REID (1841-91)

is the grandson, great to the sixth degree, of John Reid of Wester Kittochside (floruit 1574-1619)

In "The Reids of Kittochside" (Glasgow, 1945), Herbert Reid asserted that "A family of ten [children] were born to William Reid and Mary Drew, eight in Glasgow, before they emigrated." George and his sister Elizabeth were the two children born to William Reid and Mary Drew after they emigrated from Scotland. All ten children are noted on Herbert Reid's "Table T" on page 20.

OBITUARY:

Died. At the German Hospital, Chicago, Wednesday, Feb. 25th, 1891, Mr. Geo. M. Reid, aged 50 years.

Mr. Reid was the proprietor of Reid's Park, at the head of Lake Geneva, and his death is a great surprise to his many friends throughout the county. Several years ago he had a tooth extracted, but a prong that was not taken out has caused considerable distress and about a month ago it was decided to go to Chicago and have an operation performed. After the operation he was able to get around the hospital some but the disease finally settled in his brain, causing death in a short time. The remains reached here on Wednesday evening and the funeral was held at the home of Mrs. Shimmins, sister of Mrs. Reid, on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. C. A. Hobbs officiating. The pall-bearers were Messrs. A. V. Sawyer, M. Gavett, P. R. Jackson, J. R. Barlow, C. W. Irish and L. W. Parish. The remains were buried in Spring Grove cemetery.

The deceased leaves a wife and three children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father. They have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.

I speculate that George M. Reid's middle name may have been Manierre, because around the time of his birth his sister Ann wed the prosperous Chicago lawyer, George Manierre. This connection may have been such a happy one for the family that William and Mary Elizabeth Reid (Drew) might name their baby boy after their new son-in-law.
