James Drew Reid

JAMES DREW REID

is the son of William of William Reid, sometime writer (lawyer) in Glasgow, Scotland, and afterwards of Walworth County, Wisconsin, USA, and his wife, Mary Elizabeh Drew. He was born at Glasgow on 11 July 1829 and baptised there shortly thereafter. His maternal uncle, James Drew, at this time a writer (lawyer) in Glasgow, was one of the witnesses present. His baptismal entry reads as follows: William Reid, Writer, & Mary Drew a law: son James Drew bo: 11th July. Wit: The Revd. James Thomson & James Drew" [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Baptismal Register for Glasgow, reference OPR.644.1/33, frame 4254]

James Drew Reid was at home in Walworth, Walworth County, Wisconsin, with his parents and siblings when the US census of 1850 was enumerated. His age was given up as twenty years [United States Census, 1850, index and images, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M4DP-N28

James Drew Reid probably died before 24 March 1879 for he is not mentioned in the last will and testament of his uncle, James Drew [National Archives of Scotland, Copy of Probate and the Will of the late James Drew, formerly writer in Glasgow, late of Cornwall Terrace, Regents Park, County of Middlesex, London (Registered in a Non-Scottish Court), reference SC70/6/16, pages 543-596].

NOTE BY MICHAEL REID DELAHUNT

Herbert Reid, in his book, "The Reids of Kittochside, Part II," published in 1945 in Glasgow, asserted that "A family of ten [children] were born to William Reid and Mary Drew, eight in Glasgow, before they emigrated. [Herbert Reid relates information about children John Reid, Ann Hamilton Reid, and Elizabeth Fairlie Reid, then writes] It is strange that nothing seems to be known of the other offspring of William Reid, viz., James Drew Reid, William Reid, Agnes Reid, and Robert Reid." All ten children are noted on Herbert Reid's "Table T" on page 20.

Michael Reid Delahunt (2010): I speculate that several of William Reid's children remained in Scotland instead of emigrating with their parents.
