About George Laurence Stone

http://stonehistory1800.webs.com/

George Stone was the son of Captain Jonas Stone and Meriam Tucker, and was born in Trepassey, Newfoundland around 1760. He married Mary Doody during the late 1700s, and they relocated to Lynche's River in 1800.

They traveled by vessel to Sydney and then made their way either by vessel or on foot through the woods and along the shore of the Bras D'or lake, eventually to build a small log cabin at the entrance to Lynche's River, near today to the Lynche's River Bridge on the old road.

George was a cooper, a trade he passed on to his sons. In 1809 George obtained a land grant for 158 acres at Lynche's Creek, eventually securing 358 acres. He built his initial log cabin but did not obtain a land grant for this piece until 1834. His oldest son Jonas applied for a grant as well which was granted in 1834. This land was to the south and east of the original grant at the shore, up on the side of Stone Mountain. Eventually, the family switched lots, as Jonas' widow Margaret "Peggy" liked the shore lot, today still known as Peggy's Point. Today the log cabin is gone, but bits of the rock foundation remain. In 1809 George obtained a land grant for a piece of land where he built a second homestead. George lived on at Lynche's River until about 1830. The 1838 census shows a widow George Stone, indicating he had died prior to 1838.

He is listed as deceased on son George's 1836 marriage record.
