Deaf and mute. Raised in an orphanage in Sr. Louis, Missouri. Harry was deaf and mute as a result of scarlet fever.
The 1900 Federal Census recorded him at home with his father and mother and sisters and brother Max on June 2, 1900. He was a presser. They lived at 1520 Washington Street in the City of St. Louis. He was single. He was born in Missouri. His parents, Sam and Dora, were born in Austria. Their parents were also born in Austria.
He was married twice; the first was Dorothy M, a woman with the same impairment, on April 24, 1901. Harry was raised in the St. Joseph Deaf Mute Institute and met his first wife there. They had a son Oliver born Nov 10, 1904 and a son Milton (Milton S. Berwin, Sr.) born July 25, 1902 both in St. Louis, and a daughter named Hattie.
He is recorded in the 1910 Federal Census of St. Louis living with his wife and three children at 2107 Carr Street. He was a presser in a tailor shop.
He signed a World War I draft card on September 12, 1918 while living at 1311 Monroe Street in the city of St. Louis. He was described at being tall, of medium build and with brown hair and brown eyes He was married. He was employed as a garment presser at Curlee ?lase Company.
