Harry (Henry) Shields

Henry was known as Harry. He was a Motor Mechanic as can been seen on his death certificate.
Harry married Janet Moffat. Janet was known as Jessie. The lived at 98 North Frederick Street, Glasgow.

On their marriage certificate it tells us that this was not a regular marriage. This meant that the wedding was not conducted by a priest or minister. Churches disagreed with these marriages, as it tells us on Scotland’s People’s Website. The Churches accepted them for fear of couples ‘living in sin’.
The marriage was by declaration in front of their witnesses and by proof of a warrant from a Sheriff or Sheriff substitute.
This was the case in Harry and Jessie’s marriage.
They married on 5th December 1919 at 83 West Regent Street Glasgow by Declaration of Harry Kennedy (Motor Mechanic) and Agnes Jeffrey or Moffat.
The certificate was registered and signed by Harry, in the name of Harry and not Henry. He was 34 years old and recorded as being a Motor Mechanic.
He was described as being a Batchelor.

Jessie signed as Jessie H. Moffat and not Janet. Was the H for Helen and not Ellen.
She was 35 years old and described as being a Spinster.

Harry’s address was given as 3, Kitchener Street, Dalmuir.
Jessie’s address was given as 13 Partickhill Road, Patrick. Glasgow.
Harry’s father was Hugh Shields (Motor Mechanic) Deceased.
His mother was Mary Ellen Shields (M.S Condon) Deceased.

Jessie’s father was Thomas Moffat, occupation Gardener.
Her mother was Mary Moffat (M.S. Johnston) Deceased.
The marriage was by the Warrant of Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire.

Sadly, Jessie died on the 23rd December 1950. She died at home from Acute Myocarditis which she had suffered from for one month. Her death certificate tells us she is married to Harry at the time, but her middle name is recorded as Ellen, yet she signed H on her wedding certificate. Was her middle name Helen, not Ellen.

Incredibly, Harry dies the following day on Christmas Eve, 24th December 1950.
His cause of death was Pulmonary Tuberculosis (3years).
Harry died at home too.
His death certificate describes him as being a Widower to Jessie.

Jessie was 66 years old when she died and Harry was 65 years old.
Both of their death entries are on the same page.
Jessie’s is above Harry’s.

Both of their death certificates were signed by James Shields, Brother to Harry and Brother in law to Jessie.
