About Hattie Eda Groce
Hattie Eda Flatt, the second daughter of Walter B. and Hannah Priscilla Flatt, was born 2 August 1862, directly after her father's return to his regiment after his furlough in July. She was a tiny premature baby weighing only 2 1/2 or 3 pounds and the family had small hopes of raising her but she lived to the age of 74 years, a woman dearly loved by all who knew her. The family records give her full name as Hattie Eda but she always told her children that her full name was Hattie Louella Edith.
In December 1880 she was married to Jacob Benton Groce. After the birth of their first child they went to South Dakota and took up homestead land living for a number of years in the customary "soddie." Later they moved to Portland, Oregon and in November 1895 they went to Pomona, California on account of her health. There she spent most of the rest of her life. She lived only a half block from Grandpa and Grandma after they came to Pomona and was constant in her loving care toward them as long as they lived. She had three daughters.
