About Henry Stockton Montgomery, (CSA)
Henry S. was a son of James and Amanda Brannon Montgomery. He was named for his grandfather, Henry Montgomery.
He married Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Jones of Amherst, Va., daughter of Suvillian W. and M. J. Jones, in Fayetteville, WV on Dec. 13, 1866.
Henry S. Montgomery was a veteran of the Civil War, Co. I, 8th Reg. Va. Cavalry.
R.K. Holliday, in A Portrait of Fayette County, writes: "Henry S., 17, joined the Army and served until the close of the war. Hardships of Army life and a period of imprisonment was instrumental in ruining Henry's health."
Shirley Donnelly, reporter and chronicler of Fayette County history, writes that as a result of his experience as a prisoner of war, "[h]is health was undermined and he died a young man."
His brother Lawrence died of typhoid while serving in the Confederate army.
