History of Downingtown, PA:
"Jacob Downing's family is shown in a photo in the Smedley Genealogy, they look very like the Downings of Illinois near Powellton, descendants of Joseph Downing; they have exactly the same nose." May have owned property in Cambria county.
From "Chester County and its People", 1898:
"Jacob Downing lived the greater part of his life in Philadelphia. He was engaged in the iron business at Atsion, New Jersey, where he owned a forge and rolling mill."
VILLAGE RECORD, Chester county, October 8, 1823: "Death Notice at Downingtown, on the 3rd inst. Jacob Downing, aged about 60 years."
Quaker records show his birth year as 1757 instead of 1756. The life of Jacob is commented upon frequently in "The Diary of Elizabeth Drinker", his mother-in-law.
