James Barnes immigrated from England around 1670-1680, either with family or as an indentured servant. A James Barnes did arrive in Maryland on the ship 'Cecelius' from Bristol/England in 1676 and this could be our progenator. Whoever James was, he married quite well. His wife, Keturah Shipley born around 1683 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland was the daughter of Adam Shipley and Lois Howard. James and Keturah were married before 1698 and had nine children between 1699 and June 1717, seven sons and two daughters.

James Barnes died by 13 July 1726 when his estate was inventoried by Jno. Hammond of Charles and [Thomas?] Wainwright, and valued at L85,18.9. The inventory included a set of carpenter's tools and some shoemaker's tools, in addition to the usual furniture/St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel, Maryland, USA.


James Barnes married Keturah Shipley, daughter of Adam Shipley and Lois Howard, on Friday, 19 March 1705/6 Anne Arundel Co. Maryland. James Barnes died on 18 June 1726 at Maryland. His estate was probated on 18 June 1726 at Baltimore County, Maryland.

James Barnes owned 103 acres Eve's Dowry, pt. of Adam the First, on the south side of Patapsco Hundred; Admin. bond was posted 18 June 1726 by Keturah S. Barnes with Robert Shipley and Robert Barnes; estimated inventory 13 July 1726 by John Hammond and ? Wainwright and valued at 85.18.9lbs sterling. Keturah was alive in August 1730; From book "Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759. He immigrated on 15 April 1698. He lived circa 1701 at Elk Ridge Hundred, Baltimore County, Maryland. He was Individual Note on 13 July 1726; Inventory value 85.18.9lbs sterling.
