James Greene "of Potowomut" (1626-1698)

James Greene, "of Potowomut," was baptized June 21, 1626, and came to New England with his parents. He married (first) about 1658 Deliverance, born in 1637, daughter of Robert Potter and wife Isabel. (Robert Potter was the ancestor of Bishop Potter, of New York and Pennsylvania.) She died in 1664, and he married (second) Aug. 3, 1665, Elizabeth, daughter of John and Susannah Anthony, of Portsmouth, R. I. She died in 1698.

James Greene died "at his mansion in Potowomut," April 27, 1698, in the seventy-second year of his age.

The children of the first marriage of James Greene were: James, Mary, Elisha and Sarah; and of the second marriage: Peter, Elizabeth, John, Jabez, David, John and Susanna.

James Greene was made a freeman of Warwick and Providence Plantations in 1647, and resided at Old Warwick. He was a member of the General Assembly of the Colony, being commissioner under the first charter and deputy and assistant under the second (1663) for ten years, between 1660 and 1675. He was considered a man of much practical sagacity. On the outbreak of the Indian war, 1675-76, the inhabitants of Warwick left the town and Mr. Greene fled to Portsmouth, and in 1684, having made purchases of Warwick land, he removed to Potowomut, where was an ancient mill, and built his home on the hill near the west bank of the river, overlooking the beautiful lake which furnished the water power for the forge which his grandsons (sons of Jabez) established for making anchors and other forms of iron work. This became a notable industry in Colonial times and in the early days of the Republic. The interests of the forge "were enhanced by the revival after peace existed between England and her emancipated colonies, and this became the pioneer of the more extensive works on the Pawtuxet river, near the western border of the Warwick, known as 'the Forge'." The place at Potowomut, where James Greene resided until his death, was the birthplace of his great-grandson, the highly distinguished Nathaniel Greene, of the Revolutionary army, and the residence of his descendants for more than two hundred years.

He was made a freeman in 1655. He was commissioner in 1660 through 1663, deputy to the General Court in 1664-1671, 1674-1675, 1685-1686, 1690, and Assistant in 1670 -1671. In 1697 he deeded land to his son James. He was great grandfather of Mayor General Nathaniel Greene.

He was considered "a man of much practical sagacity." He does not appear to have been in public life after the Indian war (1675-6), when his house, withal others in Warwick, except the " Stone Castle," was burned to the ground. When the message from the General Assembly advising the people of Warwick of danger was received, he fled to Portsmouth, R. I., where the father of his second wife, John Anthony, resided. He remained for some years at "Hunting Swamp," but in 1684, having made purchases of Warwick land (6)((Warwick Records. 1664, 1st Book of Marriages. This lot was located on the main street, the second lot north easterly from the road leading to Warwick Neck. The burial-ground and lot descended to his eldest son, James, whose descendants have been buried there to the present generation.

The estate in Old Warwick has within a few years been sold out of the Greene family, but they still retain owner ship of this ancient and historic burying-ground located near the site of the "Stone Castle." In recent years much has been done to preserve the history of the family records, memorial stones having been erected by Rufus W. Greene and Benjamin Greene Arnold, containing records of the Greene ancestors dating back to John Greene of Salisbury, England. And thus they will passed on to coming generations, who will gratefully appreciate the fore thought which has preserved them, and the resting place of their ancestors.

With first wife Deliverance Potter had 5 kids. Died from exposure fleeing local natives.B 1626 D 1664 Warwick, RI. Second wife Elizabeth Anthony- had 10 kids, including Jabez

He was christened 21 June 1626 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England and died 27 April 1698 in Warwick, Rhode Island.

He was married to Deliverance Potter in 1658, Warwick, RI. She was born Jan 5, 1637 Boston and died 27 Mar 1664 Warwick, RI. She died from exposure while fleeing from the Indians into the wilderness. "The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island."

James Greene, son of Joan Tatterershall and John Greene, Sr., the surgeon, married twice. He married first Deliverance Potter in 1658. James and Deliverance had James, Mary, Elisha, and Sarah. James Greene married second, Elizabeth Anthony, on 3 August 1665 in Rhode Island. James and Elizabeth had Peter, Elizabeth, John, Jabez, David, Thomas, John and Susanna.

James Greene was born 21 June 1626. He married Deliverance Potter. They were the parents of four children. She died of exposure when the Massachusetts troops invaded Rhode Island. He then married Elizabeth Anthony. She is the daughter of John and Susanna (Potter) Anthony. They were married 3 August 1665. They were the parents of eight more children. James died 27 April 1698 at Potowomut, Rhode Island. See the Anthony histories.

James Greene was made a Freeman of Warwick and Providence Plantations in 1647. He resided at Old Warwick on what was then the main street on the south side. This street is now called Tanner Ave. It is a weed-infested alley although the old graveyard which is located on this property may still be seen. James Greene was very active in public affairs and was considered to have been in public life after the Indian War (1675-1676). His home, with all others in Warwick, except the “Stone Castle” were burned to the ground. James Greene heeded the warning of danger and fled to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where the father of his second wife resided. In 1684, he purchased land and moved to Potowomut and built his house on the hill near the west bank of the river, overlooking the beautiful lake. This lake furnished the water for power for the forge which his grandsons established for making anchors and other forms of iron works. This house was the birthplace of his great-grandson, Nathaniel Greene, aide to General George Washington.

James Green was buried in the Greene Graveyard under an altar tomb on his original house lot. It comprised of six acres granted by the proprietors of Warwick in 1647. Unfortunately, time and vandalism have taken their toll on this historic old burying ground. When it was visited by a distant cousin to us, in 1973, the altar stone was gone and the graveyard was weed infested and neglected
