Apparently JOAN TATTERSHALL GREENE did not die at sea as was previously believed. JOAN sought refuge in Occupassnatuxet (aka Pastuxet, now Warwick), Rhode Island, from the Massachusetts authorities in 1643. She died there that year.

The following year (1644) JOHN GREENE, with other leading men of the plantation, went to England and succeeded in obtaining a just assertion of their rights.

JOAN TATTERSHALL, of Stapleton County, Wilts, the first wife of JOHN GREENE, the founder of the family in this country, was born in England, and was married November 4, 1619, in Salisbury. She was a connection of the family of GEORGE TATTERSHALL was seated at Satpleton County, Wilts which is about five miles distant from his Salisbury home.

The first of the family Eudo, of whom we have mentioned, came in with William the Conqueror, and obtained the "Lordship of Tattershall" in Lincolnshire. ROBERT TATTERSHALL, his great great grandson, married MABEL or ANNEBEL, eldest daughter of WILLIAM Earl of Arundel. Eudo seated himself in Lincolnshire, from which he took his surname. ROBERT TATTERSHALL became possessed of very large estates in 1244, particularly of the Castle and Manor of Buckenham in County Norfork, which was made their principal seat. His descendants were seated in Berkshire and Norforkshire and were held in high repute.

Apparently Mrs. Joanne "Joan" Tattershall Greene did not die at sea in 1635 as has been recorded by others. Joan sought refuge with the Indians in the area called Occupassnatuxet (aka Pawtuxet, now Warwick), Rhode Island, from the Massachusetts authorities in 1643. The event was so trying that she died there from shock.

MY ANCESTOR John Greene and Joanne Tatersole, were married at St. Thomas Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 4 Nov 1619. The marriage and baptism of their seven children are all recorded in the Parish Register at the St. Thomas Church at Salisbury, Eng. She was the first of his three wives.

The Greene Genealogy by General G. S. Greene, 1902, states that she was born in 1598 at Gillingham, Dorset, England, the daughter of Richard Tattershall and his wife, Marjorie (Fox), and that she died in 1636 at Southampton, England. According to an LDS record, she died aboard the ship JAMES during their passage. However, others believe that she arrived in Boston with her family on June 3, 1635, and she died in Boston. It is also claimed that she is buried with her husband behind the Shawomet Baptist Churchyard in Warwick, R. I. Others claim that it was John's second wife, Alice, who is buried with him.

Biography
Joanne TATTERSHALL was born of father Rychard Tattershall ...and mother Margaret Fox ...in1598 in Wilts, County Stapleton, ENGLAND. She was the first wife of JOHN GREENE, (founder of the Greene family in America) married November 4, 1619, St. Thomas Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England[1] The mother of all his children, she is said to have died soon after his removal to Rhode Island, OCT 1643 in Occupassnatuxet (aka Pastuxet, now known as Warwick), Providence (now Kent) County, Rhode Island and to have been buried OCT 1643 at Conimicut Farm Cemetery, Warwick, Providence (now Kent) County, Rhode Island. Note: A descendant of the title "Lordship of Tattershall".[2]

1598 Gillingham, Dorset, England[3][4]

Other records indicate she died at sea, in 1635, enroute to Rhode Islan on Board Ship "James" ( Southampton, England). Apparently Mrs. Joanne "Joan" Tattershall Greene did not die at sea; Joan sought refuge with the Indians in the area called Occupassnatuxet (aka Pastuxet, now Warwick), Rhode Island, from the Massachusetts authorities in 1643. The event was so trying that she died there from shock that year. The following year (1644) JOHN GREENE, with other leading men of the plantation, went to England and succeeded in obtaining a just assertion of their rights.

"Joanne Tattershall (or, as it was written on the church register, "Tatarsole"). Nothing is definitely known of her English connections. The name is frequently found in early records among post-mortem examinations, parliamentary writs, and charters, and is variously written Tatersall, Tateshall, Tatashall, Tatershal, and Tattershall. The first of the family of whom we have mention came in with William the Conqueror and obtained the lordship of Tattershall in Lincolnshire, where he seated himself and from which he took his surname. His descendants were seated in Berkshire and Norfolkshire, and were held in high repute. It is probable that other branches located in other counties, and it is not improbable to suppose that Joanne the wife of John Greene, who emigrated to America from Salisbury, County Wilts, was a connection of the family of George Tattershall, who was seated at Stapleford, County Wilts, which is about five miles distant from his Salisbury home; but as yet this relationship has not been proved.

His descendants were seated in Berkshire and Norforkshire and were held in high repute."[5]
