James Ruthven, here treated, is the son of Major-General Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass. His name is not noticed in the Scots Peerage account of his family The Scots Peerage IV: 103 but he is noticed as the brother of Sir William Ruthven of Dunglass on the 6 December 1681, in his marriage contact with Elizabeth Walker. NRS: RH9/7/275

22 November 1681: Extract bond by Mr. William Walker, minister at Northberwick, to Anna Aikenhead, relict of Mr. John Livingstoun, doctor of medicine, in name of Elizabeth Livingstoun, her daughter, for 4000 merks scots, reg. b. of c. & s., 22 November 1681; with charge to enter heir at instance of said Elizabeth and her curators against Elizabeth and [blank, Mary] Walker, daughters and apparent heirs of deceased Mr. William, and their spouses, James Ruthven, brother of Sir William Ruthven of Drumglas, and John Hepburn of [blank, Kingston], decreet of lords of council and session, decerning said Elizabeth Walker and James to make payment to said Elizabeth Livingstone and Mr. Charles Lindsay, minister at Covingtoun, her spouse, of money due, and assoiling said Mary and John who have, renounced to be heir to said Mr. William, adjudication of 5 crofts of land in Northberwick, and lands of Whytehouse and tenements in Edinburgh, assignation to James Nicolsone of Trabroun, and other related papers.
