His Testament Dative

On 2 January 1649 the testament dative and inventory of Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass was given up by his brother, Sir Francis Ruthven of Carse. It was given up: "In name and behalf of Williame Ruthven minor sone laull to the defunt and onlie excr dative decernit to his sd umqll father be decreit of the Comissar of Edr". No provision was made for a widow, and it would appear, therefore, contrary to what is suggested elsewhere, that Barbara Leslie may have predeceased her husband.
