"Francis Ruthven, of Redcastle, co. Forfar, was cr. a Baronet [S.], as above, 11 July 1666, with rem. to heirs male of the body. He m. Elizabeth, 2d da. of Thomas (Ruthven), 1st Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S.], by Isabel, da. of Robert (Balfour, formerly Arnot), Lord Balfour of Burleigh [S.]. This Elizabeth, who d. before Oct. 1674, was 2d of the three sisters of the 2d Lord, who d. unm. April 1701. Sir Francis d. s.p.m., when the Baronetcy became extinct...
...Isobel, his 1st da. and coheir, became in Oct. 1622, heir of line to her maternal grandfather, Thomas (Ruthven), 1st Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S.], and inherited the estates of that family. She assumed that peerage (on the ground that it had been granted to the heir general) which was borne by her son and has continued to be so by the heirs of his body."
