James Shields Speer

James was born in Neshannock, PA, to Thomas and Mary Shields Speer. He was one of 10 children. In the 1840's, he walked to Logan County, Ohio, with his brother Thomas Cargill, to visit his Aunt Agnes Speer Wylie. There, he met and fell in love with the daughter of Agnes' brother-in-law, Margaret Wylie, whom he found beautiful. They wed on 9 Sept 1845, and had a wonderful life, with 8 children: Elizabeth Ann "Eliza" (Gibson), Thomas Henderson, John Thomas Wylie, Mary Jane (Burch), Robert Cargill, Eleanor/Helen Agnes "Ella"(Connell), David Alexander, and Margaret "Maggie" Rebecca (Dufur). In 1864, they moved to California, Mich., where they farmed. Inscription: Grandfather James 1818-1906 SPEER
