About Jane Calvert

Jane Lowe was the daughter of Vincent Lowe and Anne Cavendish. She married, firstly, Henry Sewell before 1666. She married, secondly, Maj.-Gen. Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore, son of Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore and Hon. Anne Arundell, circa 1666. She died circa 19 January 1700/1. She was buried on 24 January 1700/1 at St. Gile's-in-the-Fields Church, London, England.


JANE LOWE, dau. of Vincent Lowe, m. 1st Hon. Henry Sewall, M.D. Secretary of the Province of Maryland. In 1663 Mattapany cont. 1,000 a. with addition of 200 a., was issued by the Proprietary to Hon. Henry Sewall in SM [St. Marys] Co. Henry Sewall was the son of Richard Sewall of Nuneaton, Warwick Co., England and his wife Mary Dugdale. Henry returned to England in 1664 and d. soon after. . . .

Henry Sewell, Patuxent River, d. leaving a will dated 25 Apr 1664, proved 17 Apr 1665. Mentioned were bro. Samuel Sewell to whom was devised 200 a.; cousin Richard Dudley, 100 a.; Roman Catholic Church, personalty. To wife Jane, extx., and children: Nicholas, Elizabeth, Mary, and Ann Sewall and to unborn child, balance of estate. Wits.: William Bretton, Edward Savage. . . .

Jane met Charles Calvert on board ship returning from England, each having bur. their first spouse. A courtship ensued and she m. in 1666 Charles Calvert, then Governor of MD later third Lord Baltimore. Jane was called a great beauty. Jane d. 19 Jan 1700 and was bur. at St. Giles-in-the-Fields, Middlesex, England. She had 5 more children by Charles Calvert.
