About Jean-Baptiste Joffrion dit St-Jean

Jean Joffrion was also known as Jean St-Jean. He was born on 17 Apr 1671.
He appeared on the census of 1681 as a 9 year old boy living in Verchères. At the age of 9 he was present at the confirmation of André Jarret in Verchères. His sister, Marie, was present also.
Jean Joffrion was employed by Jean Mailhot, a fur trader on 4 April 1695 to travel to the Outaouais in the region to the north of Lake Michigan. Many men became voyageurs each summer and returned to their families in the Fall. It took fifteen days of traveling on the Saint Lawrence River to get from Montréal to Illinois and another twenty days to get down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. Many French-Canadians were dispersed along all these routes.
Jean Joffrion married Catherine Millot, daughter of Jacques Millot and Jeanne Hébert, on 17 April 1698 at Varennes, (Verchères), Nouvelle-France. She was the widow of Jacques Mongeau.
Jean Joffrion witnessed the baptism of Catherine Joffrion on 16 November 1698 at Cap-St-Michel, Varennes, (Verchères), Nouvelle-France.
Jean Joffrion witnessed the baptism of Jean-Baptiste Joffrion on 26 September 1703 at Varennes, Nouvelle-France.
He witnessed the birth of Joseph Joffrion on 18 March 1708 in Varennes, Nouvelle-France.
Becoming a widower, he married for a second time. He married Marie LeFrançois, daughter of Pierre LeFrançois and Madeleine Gaumont, on 17 March 1709 at Ste-Anne's Church, Varennes, (Verchères), Nouvelle-France. Nine children were born of these two marriages.
On 17 July 1709, before Notary Bourdon, he borrowed the sum of 141 pounds. In this notarized act, Jean Joffrion used the surname ST-JEAN. Some of his descendants have kept this surname. Neither Pierre nor any of his other children used the name of ST-JEAN.
On 16 April 1713, he bought some land that measured 3 acres of frontage by 30 acres deep located in the seigneurie of St-Michel et Trinité, property of Pierre Mongaux and located in Varennes. Notary Bourdon executed the deed. There he built himself a home.
Jean Joffrion witnessed the baptism of Gabriel Geoffrion on 14 February 1717 in Varennes, Nouvelle-France.
He witnessed the burial of Marie LeFrançois on 27 April 1731 in Varennes, Nouvelle-France.
Jean Joffrion died on 8 January 1740 in Varennes, (Verchères), Nouvelle-France, at age 68.
