Jefferson was a Cherokee man

Biography

Jefferson was born about 1816 in the Cherokee Nation. He was the son of Hair Conrad and Ollie Candy. He was married to Martha Chicoowee/Chinosa O'Fields and had children with four other women, Eliza Tyner, Wah-le/Polly (a full-blood Cherokee), and Mary "Polly" Sanders. He was the father of at least eleven children: with Martha, Elizabeth, Clay, Diana, John, Charlotte, Ta-ya-wa/Nancy, and David; with Eliza, Francis Hare; [1] with an unknown woman, Abigail; with Wah-le/Polly (unknown), Joseph; and with Polly Sanders, George. [2] The family was Removed to Indian Territory in the Bushyhead detachment and settled in Going Snake District. They appear on the 1851 Drennan roll. [3] Jefferson was elected Senator from Going Snake District in 1847 and 1849. He died in Indian Territory about 1862. [4]
