  • He was born 1749 in Amherst Co., VA [163], and
  • died 16 September 1781 in Floyd's defeat by Indians, near present day Eastwood, KY [164].
• She married (2) JAMES A. STURGIS [165] 28 May 1784 in Jefferson Co., KY [166],[167],
  • son of JAMES A STURGIS and MARGARET. He was born Abt. 1756, and
  • died Aft. 1810168.

From B. Frank Reinauer III: Jemima Floyd appears to be one of Col. John Floyd's younger sisters. Anna M. Cartlidge gives her year of birth as 1753 (in Virginia). She married (1)ca. 1769, John Lemaster (b. ca. 1749; died 16 Sep 1781 -- during Floyd's defeat); (2) bond posted 28 May 1784, Jefferson County, KY, James A'Sturgus, Jr. (b. ca. 1760; lived 1810 in Bullitt County, KY according to the census)

From Alex Luken: "Pat-- Jo Nell sent me this from something called the Lemaster book... 'I found them.... see the Lemaster book page 83. Issue 70 Eleazer Lemaster b abt 1749 d Sept 16-22, 1781 near Louisville, Ky., killed by Indians m abt 1768 Jemima Floyd b 1753 Amherst Co. Va. After the death of Eleazer Lemaster she m2 in Jefferson Co., Ky., May 28, 1784 James A' Sturgus Jr. by whom she has issue: Cynthia A'Sturgus who m Jan 23 1800 William Pope. Jemima Lemaster received land grant of 400 acres on Beech Fork, Jefferson, Co. Ky May 10 1784.' "

It appearing to the Court that the following Persons, are entitled by virtue of an Act of Assembly passed May last, to four hundred acres of land, each. Elton L. Powell sent this to Rootsweb in February 2003:

'THE LEMASTER FAMILY IN THE USA,' Call #- APV [Lemaster], Howard M. Lemaster, in the Book Location: New York Public Library, Genealogy Section, 1st Floor, 42nd and 5th Ave.

"According to the early History as outlined in this Book, the Lemaster name, with it's many variations, started out with one Claude Le Maistre, [or Glaude I], spelled it with a 'G'], who died in 1683, and refers everyone to see 'A History of Harlem' for more info on the Lemasters. [I have no info on that book]. And, like I said; he quotes from 'the Cabells and Their Kin' by Alex. Cabell. In the 1700's the name became Le Maitre in Europe. The part about the Lemaster- Floyd connection is also covered in this book.

"Most of the families are listed by the Head of the house. That's all I have for now."

Photocopy of transcript (some typewritten, some handwritten) by M. Herberger; transcript was of genealogical column published in the 2 May 1909 issue of The Times Dispatch (Richmond, Virginia). Includes Armistead, Asturges (Asturgus, Sturges), Field, Floyd, Goen, Pope and related families. John LeMaster (d.1784) immigrated to Virginia, and married Jemima Floyd, a daughter of Wales immigrant William Floyd (d.1783). John died in an Indian fight near Louisville, Virginia (later Kentucky). John Floyd LeMaster (ca.1769-1807) married twice, and moved from Virginia to Bullitt County, Kentucky. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Colorado and elsewhere.

16 Dec 2000 From: Jim Sturgis <jim.sturgis@mindspring.com> ...I am researching my Sturgis/Sturgus/Sturges line, and located your information on James A. Sturgis, b. abt 1752, who married Jemima Floyd on 28 May 1784 in Jefferson County, KY.... My gg-grandfather was William Floyd Sturgus, b. abt 1789 in KY, d. 1852 in AL, m. Eliza Williams Gresham. The link between William and his ancestors in KY is not yet known, but with the middle name "Floyd" there may be some connection to Jemima Floyd. Do you know of any children of James A. Sturgis and Jemima Floyd, or indeed, anything about the family of James? Jemima's family seems well documented. The name "Minor" appears in our family and was my father's middle name as it is mine. (Editor: there are several Miner or Minor or Minart A'Stugusses, et al....) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

...and from Alex Luken: James A'Sturgis was one of the earliest settlers in Jefferson County. Sturgis Station is located near the home the Bullitts, which is still occupied by members of the family. If you follow Beargrass Creek, moving northeast, you would have Floyd Station, then about a mile away, Low Dutch Station, then about 1.5 miles away, Sturgis Station. I believe the spring house from Sturgis Station is still standing. Most of my reseach and my interest in the Floyds is through their attachment to the Fontaine family, which also has ties to the Minor Family. There were Minors in Jefferson County at that time as well....

Alex Luken later writes that the basic Sturgis family appears to be as follows:

• James A'Sturgis Sr. m. Margaret ? received 400 acre land warrant 6/1/1780 on Harrods Trace. I believe he may have come from VA or MD. Functioned as a skilled boatbuilder for George Rogers Clark. There are four known sons:
• 1. John A'Sturgus -- moved to Missouri no dates per Early Settlers of Jeffersontown and Southeastern Jefferson Co. Could not find marriage in Jefferson Co.
• 2. James A'Sturgus Jr.--speculation: b. 1754 d. 1816 married 1st Mary Ogelby (DAR) This age would be too young to be James Sr. Jemima would be the wrong age to marry James Sr. if Margaret was the mother of Sr.'s sons at the time of Sr's death.
• 3. Peter A'Sturgus married Ann "Nancy" Tyler. Established A'Sturgus Station spring 1780. Springhouse still stands on Oxmoor Farm. Mentioned in Sr.'s will daughter Margaret A'Sturgus, daughter of Peter, deceased. Peter died at Floyd's Defeat, aka Long Run Massacre. (As did Jemima's husband Eleazar LeMaster.) Peter is credited with being the nephew of John Floyd, but in 1780 John Floyd was too young to have a nephew old enough to do that, unless Margaret was his sister, or Margaret was Margaret Buchanan, sister of Jane Buchanan. That's a possibility. She was widowed by the time the family moved to KY so James Sr. could have been her second husband. Anyhow, 8/16/1785 Nancy Tyler A'Sturgus married Capt. James Denny. She married 3rd Michael Humble.
  • This gets to be an interesting twist: Marriage Book 1 page 29 2/19/1798 John LEMASTER marries Peggy ASTURGUS, bond is posted by William POPE Jr.
• 4. Minard (Minert, Miner, Minor) A'Sturgus predeceased his father. Moved to Vincennes IN and is presumed killed by Indians ca. 1786. There is a lot on information on this family with the Vincennes DAR and the Northern CA DAR. Have correspondence and will send it. There is a Minard Sturgis who was a professor at Hanover College that I presume is from this family. There are bible records for this family with the Vincennes DAR. There was only one son, Robert. Interestingly, a Robert A'Sturgus pops up in Jefferson Co. early 1800's but is most likely a cousin. Married Ann Mayes, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Mayes. Miner Sturgis was born 1/26/1759. Descendants of this line dropped the A' but continued to use A. as a middle initial.
