About Jessie Ann Croucamp

The great grandson(Joseph Croucamp, found via Facebook) of Jessie Ann, has given the same DOB matching what Charlie had. Jessie's date of death is listed on Joseph's DN six years later and she is buried in South Park Cemetery, next to Joseph, although the photo is not on eGGSA.

Jessie had 7 children from what we know of. 5 from first marriage with Melville Watkins, 1 with 'Parsons', and 1 with Joseph Croucamp.

Joseph(Jr) has provided all the information he knows. Including mentioning that Jessie Ann was apparently born in a concentration camp during Boer War, although this is unlikely from researching online. She was born during the war however. Joseph now says she was in a camp aged 2.

This is what BCCD(Department of Historical Studies, University of Cape Town) replied saying when I asked about whether she could have been born in a camp,

"Yes, it is possible although it sounds rather unlikely. The reason why it is just possible is because of the Aliwal North connection. The Aliwal North camp was actually started before the Free State people came in, I think by the Aliwal North municipality. I don’t know much about this period but I assume that these were people who were homeless for some reason.

The register is not very good. All the Free State registers were copied into new volumes at some stage towards the end of the war and the quality depended on the quality of the clerks. Aliwal North camp has an unhappy story of mismanagement and I know the registers were not even kept at one stage."

Jessie Ann was however the ninth child and her brother Edmond born in 1902, the tenth child, and the eldest child was 14 years old so it's possible that the family were poor and needed to enter the concentration camp at the end of the war.

Marriage Certificate, 1919 Grahamstown,

PARSONS

One of her grandsons has confirmed that 'Aubrey Parsons' was the only child from her marriage with Parsons. He died by drowning in the bath after having an epileptic fit(as an adult, age unknown). Parson's is presumably the SECOND husband, as she marries CROUCAMP as 'Jessie Ann PARSONS', with that in mind, she would have married in the six years between Melville's death in 1932 and marrying Joseph in 1938. Aubrey is also presumably born during those dates.

CROUCAMP:

Joseph Croucamp(Jr) is the only son of Dennis Louis Croucamp who died 15.6.2010, Dennis married a Maria Magdalena Hyde(still alive) and had four children.

WATKINS'

Jessie Hannah Carpenter, passed away 2007. She had two son's, Michael who died unmarried in 1987, and Clyde Carpenter who is still alive, married to a Zelda Carpenter, working for Hydromed Hospital in Bloemfontein. Clyde provided the photo of Jessie Ann.

James 'Jimmy' Watkins, passed away January 1993 of lung cancer, leaving behind his wife Vera and son Desmond Watkins(yet to get in contact with these), Vera apparently lives in Johannesburg.

Neither the two grandsons(Joseph and Clyde) knew of the other Watkins siblings(Sylvia, Annie and Doreen), they may have died young or they didn't stay in touch. There is a Doreen May COETZEE(nee Watkins) divorcing a Marthinus Jacobus COETZEE in 1953, and a Doreen May CRONJE filing for divorce in 1963(The same year her sister Jessie Carpenter divorces her husband), previously COETZEE, nee WATKINS.
