Married Jacoba Martha Viljoen (aged 15 at the time) in 1925, they had two children, and Divorced in 1930.
Judging from the 1930 divorce papers, they had two children. Alexander was ordered to pay maintenance for one child, the divorce documents go on to show that Jacoba wanted(and got) custody of the other child.
The divorce papers stated that she wanted “custody of the younger child of the marriage,” which she was awarded. Jacoba got the daughter Elizabeth, and Alexander got his son, John Henry.

Served in the Imperial Light Horse in East Africa during the earlypart of the Second World War. Contracted Burgher's disease(sic - should be Buerger's disease which heavy smokers develop) and lost his leg because of gangrene. Was subsequently boarded out of the Army medically unfit. Augmentedhis pensionb by working as a commissioneer in the Corp of Commissioneers. His favourite duty was at the Turfontein race days. From his early days in the army to the end of his life he was a veryheavy drinker. Became very objectionable when he had too much to drink.
