13th Oct 1899, the 'first hostile act' by the Boers was cutting wires and pulling up the railways.
1934 - As per James' will attached to his Estate File, he bought '13 Donkin Street, Grahamstown', where he was living with daughter Jessie Ann Watkins who two years earlier had lost her first husband to suicide. On 28th April, James Thomas names his three year old grandson James 'Jimmy' Melville Watkins as the sole heir of his estate(13 Donkin Street which was shared with his ex-wife Jessie Ann. In 1940, James' share was worth £175, the equivalent to £5000 in 2017, whilst Jessie's share was £150 in 1941).
1940 - Last known address at time of death was '1 Goldswain Crescent, Grahamstown'.
