Catharine LEIN is merely a POSSIBLE SISTER of John LINE, our direct, as identified in The Swope Book of Remembrance by Morse and McLachlan, published 1972. They state: ìJohn Lein was a close associate of Emanuel Carpenter (Zimmerman in the original German), another early settler who owned considerable property in Lancaster County. Emanuel Carpenter's wife's name by tradition was Catharine Lein. Since she is not named in his will, she must not have been a daughter of Johannes Lein (John Lyne), but she may have been his sisterî. There are an Emmanuel Carpenter and a Catharina Zimmermaennin found in the marriage contract between John Swope to his 2nd wife Eliz. GROVE. [Please note that Zimmerman means Carpenter in German] Sources

Copy of Baptismal Certificate from the book: "History of the Swope Family and Their Connections. 1678-1896." Compiled and Edited by Gilbert Ernest Swope. Lancaster, PA.: T.B. & H.B. Cochran, Printers. 1896. Translated from Gernam. "John Swope, son of Mr. Yost Swope, a citizen of the parish of Leiman, was baptized the 28th day of May, 1704. The sponsors were John Kitzmueller and Dornlicker Muller of the Dornmill district near the town of Wislock. This is a correct copy from the church records of Leiman, near Heidelberg. J.G. Kirckmaver, Pastor of Leimen, May 5, 1720."
GERMAN NAMING CUSTOMS: In central and southern Germany during the 1700s you find most of the boy children had the name Johann with a second given name. The child would use the middle name that was unique in daily life unless he was given a single name Johannes. Likewise all daughters in a family might have dual given names with the first name being Maria or Anna for most of the children. A hundred years earlier in these same areas the boys were generally called by dual given names with the first part of it Hans instead of Johan (such as Hans Georg Müller). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suggestions from member, Holly Niblett.
