Johannes Juriaanz Westfall

In 1696 Johannes and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas, and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. Johannes was among those who obtained a deed from a group of Native Americans for land in the Minisink area. This land is believed to be located in between the present-day cities of Westbrookville and Port Jervis, Orange County, New York.

The peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement. They were among the first white people to live in the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian married Jacob's sister Styntie Kuykendall and Jacob married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard in the area, and Jacob established the first trading post. Three of Jurian's sisters married into the Dutch Kuykendall family.

"American Nomads" was written by Emily Stowell, whose ancestor Jacob Kuykendall married Sara Westfall daughter of Johannes.... The Esopus Indians lived near Wiltwyck and for a number of years they were peaceful, but in 1663 they burned and looted the town. There were 12 men, 2 children, and 4 women killed, and 6 women and 7 children taken prisoner. Jurian and his family escaped harm at the time, but later in 1667 or 1668 Jurian was killed by Indians who were at war with the Esopus Indians, while he was guiding a troop of British soldiers.

Jurian married Marretje Hansen about 1654. Marretje was born in about 1636 in Holland. Her father was Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Jansen Van Noordstrandt). Hans was born about 1610 on Norstrand Island, Netherlands, and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1638. He worked as an interpreter and often traveled between Holland and the new settlement. He married Rymerig Volkert, and they had 4 children-Marretje, Hans, Simon, and Elsa. His wife died in 1645, and Hans placed Marritje who was just 9 and her sister Elsa in the home of a farmer Phillip Garretsen where they learned the art of homemaking. Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, Brooklyn.

After Jurian's death Marritje married Jacob Jansen. Marritje, who died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.

In the record of his marriage he is called "Johannes Jurian Wesphail, YM of Fox Hall in the Esopus razed in Kingston." The occupant of Fox Hall was Thomas Chamers who came under the 1st Platoon as a farmer . . . occupied land near what is now Troy, came to Esopus (now Kingston) in 1653, became prosperous and made the manor Fox Hall out of his estate. If Johannes was born in Fox Hall, there must have been a close association there. In June of 1663 the "Massacre at The Esopus" came as a surprise between the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock in the forenoon of Thursday the 7th. Entering in bands through the gates, they divided and scattered themselves (Indians) among all the houses and dwellings in a friendly manner, having with them a little maize and some few beans to sell to our Inhabitants, by which means they kept them within their houses, and thus went from place to place as spies to discover our strength in men. After they had been about a short quarter of an hour within this place, some people on horseback rushed through the Mill gate from the New Village crying out . . . "The Indians have destroyed the New Village!". . . and with these words, the Indians immediately fired a shot and made a general attack on the village, with their axes and tomahawks, and firing on them with guns and pistols. They seized whatever women and children they could catch and carried them prisoners outside the gates, plundering houses and setting the village on fire. Following this pillage the whites combined forces and almost utterly destroyed the Ulster Indians.

In 1664 an English fleet sailed into the waters of the Dutch colony and seized the colony in the name of the Duke of York. Johannes took the Oath of Allegiance to England on 1 Sep 1689.
