About Johannes Juriaanz Westfall

In 1696 Johannes and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas, and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. Johannes was among those who obtained a deed from a group of Native Americans for land in the Minisink area. This land is believed to be located in between the present-day cities of Westbrookville and Port Jervis, Orange County, New York.

The peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement. They were among the first white people to live in the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian married Jacob's sister Styntie Kuykendall and Jacob married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard in the area, and Jacob established the first trading post. Three of Jurian's sisters married into the Dutch Kuykendall family.

"American Nomads" was written by Emily Stowell, whose ancestor Jacob Kuykendall married Sara Westfall daughter of Johannes.... The Esopus Indians lived near Wiltwyck and for a number of years they were peaceful, but in 1663 they burned and looted the town. There were 12 men, 2 children, and 4 women killed, and 6 women and 7 children taken prisoner. Jurian and his family escaped harm at the time, but later in 1667 or 1668 Jurian was killed by Indians who were at war with the Esopus Indians, while he was guiding a troop of British soldiers.

Jurian married Marretje Hansen about 1654. Marretje was born in about 1636 in Holland. Her father was Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Jansen Van Noordstrandt). Hans was born about 1610 on Norstrand Island, Netherlands, and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1638. He worked as an interpreter and often traveled between Holland and the new settlement. He married Rymerig Volkert, and they had 4 children-Marretje, Hans, Simon, and Elsa. His wife died in 1645, and Hans placed Marritje who was just 9 and her sister Elsa in the home of a farmer Phillip Garretsen where they learned the art of homemaking. Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, Brooklyn.

After Jurian's death Marritje married Jacob Jansen. Marritje, who died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.
Note: He moved to Minisink NY ca. 1698. Johannes and wife are ancestors of musician Alton Glenn Miller (1909-1944) and his brother, bandleader John Herbert Miller (1915-1987); Wm. Herman Cuddeback; Edward Davis Wood, Jr.; Gen. Wm. Stark Rosecrans; Sylvester Horton Rosecrans; Madelon Montross Juergens (1921-98); Cara Carleton (Sneed) Fiorina; John Westbrook Hornbeck (1804-48); Ralph Simpson Kuykendall (1885-1963); Frederick Stephen Upton; Lt. Edward Dixon Westfall (1820-97); Chester Eugene Ihinger Jr. (1929-2004). Probable descendant: Clay Westfall Mering.

HISTORY OF THE WESTFALL FAMILY, courtesy familysearch.org:

Johannes Westfall (son of Jurian Westval and Maritje Hansen) and hiswife Maritje Jacobz Cool, removed from Kingston to the MinisinkCountry between the years of 1698 and 1700, to a farm on the DelawareRiver near the New York/New Jersey line. Their oldest son, Jurian(George) Westfael bap. Apr 27, 1684, married Christina Van Kuykendaland 2nd Marytjen Koddebek, daughter of the emigrant Jacob Koddeback(Cuddeback). It was this Jurian Westfall who was one of the originalowners of the site of the ancient Minisink settlement. He died about1731. They settled on or near route 209, 5 miles east of Port Jervis,Orange, N. Y. (Macheckemech). Was a farmer, see history of Deerpark byPeter E. Germaer, farmer, surveyor, historian. Presumeably bap. N. Y. C., settled on the north east side of PortJervis, Orange, N. Y., toward Kingston, (see Route 209). Johannes's oldest son Jurian (Juri) and his friend Jacob Kuykendalloften hunted and trapped with the friendly Indian tribe the Minsi, oneof the 3 tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. The present day town ofPort Jervis is there now. Juri married Jacob Kuykendall's sisterStyntie and Jacob married Juri Westfall's sister Sara. They farmed andraised their families there along the Delaware River. Juri had thefirst apple orchard in the area. Juri Westfall's 3 sisters: Maretie,Jannetie, and Sara all married into the Dutch family of theKuykendalls. Juri had another sister Rebecka and 2 younger brothersJacob and Abel. He cites 16 pages of bibliographical references, old maps, 1715 and 1719 expeditions by John Redding and other papers to conclude that the road did not exist beyond being an Indian path prior to 1710. Many interesting historical points regarding the Dutch and Indians are taken up and proven or disproved. Indian Hostilities: Governor Kieft War (1643-1645) Raritan Indians were accused of stealing hogs from a Staten Island farm and from David DeVries when, in fact, some Dutch servants had committed the theft. When asked to make restitution, the Indians refused. Governor Willem Kieft responded by sending Secretary van Tienhoven with 50 armed soldiers and 20 sailors to attack the Indians, destroy their crops and take as many prisoners as possible. Facts about this person:

Fact 1 Surname also spelled Westvaal

Fact 2 Christened January 28, 1683, Kingston, New York Johannes Jurian Westvaal ( Westfall), the son of Jurian Westvaal and Maritje Hansen, was born about 1659 in Ulster Co, New Netherlands. In the record of his marriage he is called "Johannes Jurian Wesphail, YM of Fox Hall in the Esopus razed in Kingston." The occupant of Fox Hall was Thomas Chamers who came under the 1st Platoon as a farmer . . . occupied land near what is now Troy, came to Esopus (now Kingston) in 1653, became prosperous and made the manor Fox Hall out of his estate. If Johannes was born in Fox Hall, there must have been a close association there. In June of 1663 the "Massacre at The Esopus" came as a surprise between the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock in the forenoon of Thursday the 7th. Entering in bands through the gates, they divided and scattered themselves (Indians) among all the houses and dwellings in a friendly manner, having with them a little maize and some few beans to sell to our Inhabitants, by which means they kept them within their houses, and thus went from place to place as spies to discover our strength in men. After they had been about a short quarter of an hour within this place, some people on horseback rushed through the Mill gate from the New Village crying out . . . "The Indians have destroyed the New Village!". . . and with these words, the Indians immediately fired a shot and made a general attack on the village, with their axes and tomahawks, and firing on them with guns and pistols. They seized whatever women and children they could catch and carried them prisoners outside the gates, plundering houses and setting the village on fire. The greater portion of the men were abroad at their field labors, and some of the villagers were not aware of what was going on, until they became aware of the wounded in the streets. Following this pillage the whites combined forces and almost utterly destroyed the Ulster Indians.

In 1664 an English fleet sailed into the waters of the Dutch colony and seized the colony in the name of the Duke of York. The citizens offered no resistance, and New Netherland became New York, an English colony. Johannes married Maritze Jacoby Kool 28 Jan 1683/84 in Kingston, Ulster Co, New York. Johannes took the Oath of Allegiance to England on 1 Sep 1689.

Johannes was the third child born to Juriaen Westfall and Marretje Hansen. He was born at a Dutch settlement along Esopus Creek that was chartered by the Dutch as the city of Wiltwyck in 1661. There is no Kingston Dutch Church record of his christianing as it was not started until 1661. The British took over Dutch lands in 1664 and Wiltwyck renamed Kingston, New York in 1669. Johannes was age eight when his father died in 1667 and he was raised by his fathers close friend Thomas Chambers, at his Kingston estate "Ye Manor of Fox Hall". This manor was granted by the British to Thomas in gratitude for his help. Johannes wed Marretje, daughter of Jacob Barentsen Cole (Kool) and Marretje Symons Floriszen at the Kingston Dutch Reformed Church on January 28, 1683. They lived in Kingston and had:
