John Beach, Jr.

In the Book "Early Family of Wallingford" where it is stated through John Beach's will states he owned property in both "Wallingford" and "Stratford" as one of the original proprietors of Wallingford. Further, his son Thomas married Ruth Peck of "Wallingford." There were also references to his children also living in Wallingford as well as in Stratford, CT.

John Beach of Stratford's brother was Benjamin Beach, a merchant and owner of vessels.

JOHN Beach b. Apr, 1654; d. 1712 at Stratford, Connecticut; m. 1st, Dec 18, 1679, Hannah Staples of Fairfield, Connecticut, dau. of Thomas Staples, b.c. 1659; m. 2nd, Phebe Wilcoxson, widow of John Birdsey and dau. of William Wilcoxson, b.c. 1651, d. Sep 20, 1743, at age 93.

According to John Beach's will, he was a well off Farmer owning well over 159 acres of land with livestock, and he was a merchant owning family stores in Stratford, CT. He was also a slave owner owning several slaves. One of the commodities that he farmed was Wheat and at the time of his death he had over 17acres of Wheat growing in the fields, also he made Cyder and butter. Also noted were the vast sums of meats he stored. He mentioned his children in his will with endearing love, Mary and her husband Archibald Dunlop, along with her brother and sisters Ebenezer Beach, Hester and Mehitable Beach. He gave considerable sums of cash to his children in his will which may not seem like much in this day in age but actually was a lot back then.

At the time of his will probate, he owned $1000 in debts that his son Ebenezer paid off from the normal course of doing business. It is important to note he wrote his handwritten will in 1705 as it is dated as such and it wasn't probated until 1711. He gave Ebenezer "all of his land and buildings." quote from his will.

Notes

Many claim he died in 1712, but the BEACH FAMILY MAGAZINE, Vol. II, No. 2, p. 156, says that his will, dated 1705, was probated in 1711, such that he died well before 1712. The will names his second wife Phebe, brother Nathaniel, and children Ebenezer, Mary, Mehitable and Hester. The fact no mention is made of a daughter Ruth suggests he had no such child, contrary to claims found in older genealogies.
