"John Bishop, immigrant ancestor, born in England, about 1600, was one of the twenty-five immigrants who came with Rev. Henry Whitfield's company from England and founded Guilford, Connecticut. His name was signed second to the Plantation Covenant made on shipboard June 1, 1639. Robert Kitchell signed first. The order of the name indicates the respective social and other standing of the company, judging from analogy in similar cases. He was fifth on the list of trustees of the Indian purchases, and one of the four magistrates appointed to administer justice and preserve peace in the community. He brought his family of several children with him, and is said to be brother of James Bishop of New Haven, a contemporary. His wife was Anne. He died February, 1661, and she died April, 1676. His estate was the largest in the colony with the exception of Mr. Whitfield's. The site of John Bishop's homestead was suitably marked at the celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of Guilford, Connecticut, held September 8, 9, 10, 1889. Children, probably all born in England: 1. John, mentioned below. 2. Stephen, married May 4, 1654, Tabitha Wilkinson, of Bermuda, who died December 21, 1692; he died at Guilford, June, 1690. 3. Bethia, married James Steele. 5. Daughter, married -- Hubbard."

  1. Anne (1622-1671) married John Jordan.

  3. John (1625- 1683) married Susannah Goldham.
  4. Stephen (~1627- 1690) married Tabitha Wilkinson.
  5. Bethia (1631-1675) married James Steele.

Inscription

Although this person was likely interred in Guilford's original village cemetery (now the commons and public park in downtown Guilford), no surviving gravestone was known in 1818 when all gravestones at the Village Green, but not the people's remains, were dispersed to other town cemeteries. Gravesite Details Time and weather had erased the location of this grave when the cemetery was moved

Disputed Origins and other family relations A John Bishop born in the 1580s, 1590s or early 1600s would not have been the son of a Richard Bishop born in the early 1600s. While oft seen in family files, the estimated age of men Richard Bishop (Bishop-1500) and Richard Bishop (Bishop-179) would preclude them to be candidates as the father of John Bishop, early Guilford settler. See also G2G discussions: "Straightening out some Kings and Bishops, early New England immigrants" and "If John Bishop was born in 1590, how was his father Richard born in 1609?" Some family files place a daughter, Mary Bishop, the wife of George Hubbard, in the family of this John Bishop. This association was apparently devised from a passage in the will of Anne Bishop, John's widow. (Her will calls out a grandchild, "Elezabeth Hubbard.") A discussion about why George Hubbard's wife could not have been John Bishop's daughter is found in Nathan Grier Parke II, The ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley & his wife Emma Arabella Bosworth, Donald Lines Jacobus, ed. (1960), 98-100. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bishop-171
