<p>Served as a private in the Revolutionary War under the command of Capt. William Bond (4th Battalion, 2nd Establishment, New Jersey line.</p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>John and Hannah (Gildersleeve) Breese, were one of the first white families to settle in the vicinity of Elmira and Horseheads, Chemung County, NY 1787-1789.In 1789, John Breese, with his family came to Horseheads, building the first log house, which is located on the east side of the road leading from the river to Seneca Lake. They came from Somerset County, New Jersey, traveling by covered wagon through the "wilds" of northern Pennsylvania to reach their pioneer home in Chemung Valley. John Breese was a Revolutionary Soldier in Captain William Bond's Company in the 4th Battalion, 2nd Establishment in the New Jersey line. He was in the expedition commanded by Major General Sullivan against the Six Indian Nations and passed over the ground where Horseheads now stands. His Colonel was Ephiram Martin. John Breese's ancestors came from England and Wales <p>RIN: MH:N20</p>

He was a REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER in Capt. Wm. Bond's company, 4th
Battalion, 2nd establishment in the NJ line. He was in the expedition
commanded by Maj. Gen Sullivan against the Six Nations and passed over
the ground where Horseheads now stand. on 1 Sep 1779. His Coronel was
Ephriam Martin. See above.
June 1787 settled near Horseheads.
3 June 1789 Henry, John, Samuel-3 sons of John Spencer/Dorothy Riggs
left NJ and migrated with their families to PA. John had 8 children,
Henry had 7 and Samuel had 5 children plus the wives. They arrived in
Wilkes Barre 11 June 1789. Because of the unsettled condition of land
titles in Wyoming Valley John continued on stopping for a year or two in
Elmira and finally to Horseheads where he bought land and settled there.
A monument is erected along the East side of Main St. into Horseheads
marking the settlement spot and commemorating the Gen John Sullivan
battle EARLY NEW JERSEY MARRIAGES-USGENWEB (have monumnet photo)
18 Feb 1789 his Dau. Sarah was the 1st white child born in the county.
Later that year he built a log house (the 1st home in the village of
Horseheads) It was located on the spot where Sullivan"s men had spent a
night or longer as they rested from the trip back from the lakes trough
the swamp. and where they killed the broken down packhorses
1798 he built the 1st grist mill in Horseheads.

Horseheads was so named because it was there that General John
Sullivan killed his worn out horses on his return from his campaign
against the Six Nations. The town was incorporated as Fairport in May
1837, formed 8 Feb 1854 and 1845 designated Horseheads. In 1885 it
became North Elmira.
There is a Monument located at the E. side of S. Main St. Horseheads
erected by the Brees family association. Nearby was the 1st cabin of the
early settler, John Brees built in 1789. the monument reads: "1789-Near
this site was erected a cabin by John Brees, pioneer settler of
Horseheads, member of the expedition commanded by Gen. John Sullivan.
Participated in the Battle of Newtown and became the first white
settler of this section. (have pic of the monument)
