JOHN DICKSON OF BUSBIE

John Dickson of Busbie was born at Irvine about 1620. He is the eldest son of the Reverend Mr. David Dickson of Busbie and his wife Margaret Roberton. He inherited Busbie, the estate of his deceased grandfather, and took up his residence there when he attained his majority. He was a Member of Parliament, and in 1649 was appointed Commander, or Colonel, of Horse and Foot. For a time he was Clerk to the Exchequer in Scotland.

Marriage

He was married to Anna Montgomery, daughter of Sir Robert Montgomery of Skermerly by his first wife, the Lady Mary Campbell, daughter of Archibald, Marquis of Argyle.

Biography

John was born about 1620, son to Master David Dickson, minister at Irvine, Ayrshire and his wife Margaret Roberton.
At Holyroodhouse on 29 Jul 1626 a Royal Charter was granted by King Charles I to John Dickson, merchant burgess of Glasgow, and to Master David Dickson his eldest son, minister at the church of Irvine, inlife rent and after the death of John to John Dickson, eldest lawful son of Master David, of the lands of Busbie in the parish of Kilbride (Ayrshire) then in the sheriffdom of Lanark on the resignation of SirWalter Stewart of Minto, Lady Christina Crawford his spouse, and Ludovic their son.≤ref>Registrum magni sigilli regum Scotorum Vol.viii 980≤/ref>.
His grandfather John, after whom he was named, died in 1632, and John gained the designation fiar of Busbie whilehis father had liferent.

John gained a Masters Degree.

Master John Dickson, fiar of Busbie, died in 1653 and was survived by his wife and their children, David and Margaret≤ref>National Records of Scotland GD3/2/50/8≤/ref>.
Prior to his death, he wrote his testament testamentar at Glasgow on 16 Aug 1653 witnessed by Mr. Robert Baillie, professor of divinity in Glasgow, and Mr. Andrew Roberton, son to Mr. James Roberton of Bedlay. Therein he nominated Mr. James Roberton of Bedlay, Mr. David Dickson, his father, and Mr. Alexander Dickson, his brother, as tutors to his children, David and Margaret. He also nominated Andrew Dickson, his youngest brother, as their tutor≤ref name="Memorials"/>.
