John Edgar Reyburn, U.S. Representative

Reyburn (father of William Stuart Reyburn) was a U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania; born in New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio, February 7, 1845; was instructed by a private tutor and attended Saunders Institute, West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced practice in Philadelphia; member of the State house of representatives in 1871 and 1874-1876; member of the State senate 1876-1892 and served as president pro tempore during the session of 1883; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William D. Kelley; reelected to the Fifty-second, Fifty-third, and Fifty-fourth Congresses and served from February 18, 1890, to March 3, 1897; unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1896; elected to the Fifty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert Adams; reelected to the Sixtieth Congress and served from November 6, 1906, to March 31, 1907, when he resigned, having been elected mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; served as mayor from April 1, 1907, to December 4, 1911; engaged in manufacturing in Philadelphia, but retained a residence in Washington, D.C., where he died on January 4, 1914; interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
