About John Daniel Faulkner
John Daniel Faulkner (1857-1917). Son of John Lees Faulkner and his second wife Elizabeth Faulkner (nee Humphreys). John was born in Auckland in 1857. He married Annie Lizzie Piercy, daughter of Hartis and Sarah Piercy, on 24 June 1880. Annie was born in Hull, England. They and their children were the last of the Faulkners to live in the Otumoetai homestead. After the family moved to Tauranga in the early 1900s, John Daniel founded Faulkner's Ferries, which ran between the township and Mount Maunganui. John was accidentally killed on his launch 'Farina' at 10am on 7 August 1917. The launch struck the projecting headstock of the Mount Maunganui Railway Wharf which crushed John, killing him instantly. At the time he was living in Devonport Road (Bay of Plenty Times, 8 August 1917). FAULKNER Accidentally killed on the launch Farina on August 7th, 1917, Captain John Daniel Faulkner, aged 59 years. [Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 2] A TRAGIC END - Very great regret was expressed locally when the news reached Te Puke that Mr J. D. Faulkner, master of the wellknown launch Farina, had met with a fatal accident on Tuesday morning. It appears that the vessel left the Town Wharf for the Mount at the usual time, half past nine. As she was turning the north-eastern corner of the Railway Wharf she apparently came in contact with a projecting headstock on the wharf which crashed through the glass screen immediately in front of the helm and struck Mr Faulkner, crushing the top of his head against the inner partition. Mr Robert Faulkner, who was driving the launch, immediately went to his father's assistance, but death was instantaneous. The body was taken back to Tauranga, where an inquest was held. The following verdict was returned - That the deceased met his death by accidentally coming into contact with a dangerous headstock projecting from the railway wharf, and the jury adds a rider that steps should be taken to remove this danger. The late Mr Faulkner, who was 59 years of age. was born in Tauranga, and had conducted a ferry service to the Mount for many years past. He was most highly respected, and his untimed death is to be much deplored. 1917/279 Faulkner John Daniel 59Y [Te Puke Times, 10 August 1917, Page 3, Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 3 and Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 3, and Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 6897, 10 August 1917, Page 3] Source: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sooty/BOPXDeathsE...
