John Gillett was the son of Daniel Gillet 1796 and Elizabeth Bachus.

His father Daniel moved from Middlefield, Otsego, New York where John was born, to Mendon, Monroe, New York by 1830. Daniel's cousin, Joel Gillett 1764, also lived in Mendon.

John married Sophia Josephine Hill, the daughter of Gregory Hill and Lovina Lusk, in Victor, Ontario, New York, on 18 Feb 1846. Victor, Ontario County is just across the county boarder from, adjacent to, Mendon, Monroe County.

The couple lived in Mendon, Monroe, New York in 1850. By 1860, they moved to Eckford, Calhoun Michigan.

John died there in 1868, and Sophia later remarried.

They had the following children:

Elizabeth Gillett 1848-1853, buried in Mendon, Monroe, New York.

Vernor John Gillett 1868, married Irene Volney Logan, lived in Michigan. 4 children.
