About John Heard, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for Virginia. Ancestor #: A053841

John Heard was the fifth child of Stephen Heard (born about 1715 in Tyrone, Ireland) and Mary Faulkner (born about 1717 in Pennsylvania).

He married Mary Meador (born about 1751 in Virginia) in the year 1768 in Virginia.

He and Mary had 9 children:

    1. Susannah Heard, born 15 Mar 1770 in Virginia
    2. Elizabeth Heard, born 10 Mar 1772 in Pittsylvania, Virginia
    3. Jesse Heard, born 16 Mar 1774 in Virginia
    4. James Heard, born 19 May 1776 in Amelia Co., VA
    5. Sarah Heard, born 15 Jun 1778 in Amelia Co., VA
    6. Mary Heard, born 2 Oct 1780 in Amelia Co., VA
    7. Anne Heard, born 19 Mar 1783 in Washington, GA
    8. John Heard, born 2 Nov 1786 in Washington Co., GA
    9. Joel Heard, born 19 Dec 1788 in Greene, GA

It is believed that John's wife Mary died between late 1788 and 1790, and that John married a second wife named Eleanor.

It is now believed that John was not a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but he is known to have signed the Oath of Allegiance in Henry County, VA.

He is buried on private land in the woods behind Gus Channel's house outside of Greeneville, Greene Co., GA

MANY THANKS to Samuel Taylor Geer, who recorded John's burial in the John Heard Family Cemetery in Greene County, Georgia. Inscription: JOHN HEARD / Georgia Mil / Rev. War / 1797

This headstone actually was intended for John's Uncle John who was living in GA during the RW and served in the GA Militia. He was at the Battle of Kettle Creek. However, because of the like name they placed it on the wrong grave with the wrong date for Uncle John and it should have been put in Wilkes Go. GA instead as that is where he was buried.

You can join DAR on John because he signed the OATH in Henry Co. VA where he was living during the RW.

His actual Will was last seen by me stuffed in a box on the floor of the genealogy society housed across the street from the Greene Co. GA CH. It should be in the GA State Archives where it could be preserved.
