John Nelson was the son of Archie and Peggy (Oxendine) Oxendine. On Oct. 2, 1877, Archie and Peggy Oxendine were among the twenty charter members of Burnt Swamp Baptist church. In January 1881, Burnt Swamp, Reedy Branch, and Magnolia Baptist churches organized the Burnt Swamp Association.

He married Malissa Oxendine on Feb. 2, 1882 in Robeson county, North Carolina.

His brothers, William Daniel Oxendine, and James B. Oxendine are buried at Mt. Airy Baptist in Pembroke, NC. His brother, Peter Oxendine, and his sister, Emeline Oxendine Chavis are buried at Bear Swamp Baptist in Pembroke, NC.
