James B. Oxendine was the son of Archie and Peggie Oxendine. Archie and Peggie Oxendine were among the twenty charter members of Burnt Swamp Baptist church (formed October 2, 1877). In January 1881, Burnt Swamp, Reedy Branch, and Magnolia Baptist churches organized the Burnt Swamp Association.

His brother, William Daniel Oxendine, is also buried at Mt. Airy. His brother, Peter Oxendine, and his sister, Emeline Oxendine Chavis are buried at Bear Swamp Baptist in Pembroke, NC. Another brother, John Nelson Oxendine, is buried at the Oxendine Cemetery on Oak Grove Church Road in Lumberton, NC.

He married Sallie Ann Locklear on Mar. 12, 1889 in the Burnt Swamp section of Robeson county, North Carolina. He remarried after her death.

The following was taken from the Oct. 12, 1945 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

J. B. Oxendine, 86, prominent Indian and trustee of Pembroke State college, Pembroke, died at his home near Union Chapel today at 9 a.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from Mount Airy church and interment will be made in the church cemetery.

He was twice married. Surviving are his last wife and several children.
