The family of John Piggott is fairly well documented, but the origins of this John Piggott are not.

Most people estimate that John Piggott was born about 1680 in England. There is a record of a Christopher Piggot and his wife Honor who were living in London and had a son named John Piggott born there in 1679. This may well be the same John Piggott of America.

There was a John Piggott who received a certificate from the Quaker Church in London to come to America and to marry Alice Raniers. This marriage was acknowledged in the minutes of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. No further mention is made of Alice.

It is possible that the John Piggott who married Alice Raniers is the same one who married Rebecca Hardiman on March 14, 1705, and later Margery Brown on January 9th, 1712/13 at Concord in Chester County Pennsylvania. This latter (or the same) John Piggott is the head of the early Quaker Family detailed in the minutes of the Nottingham Monthly Meeting on the border of Chester County Pennsylvania and Cecil County Maryland.

John Piggott lived and died in the vicinity of Concord in Chester County. He had two or possibly three wives and had seventeen children. The first four by his second (or possibly first) wife, Rebecca Hardiman and 13 by his last wife Marjorie Brown.

I have no information on Rebecca Hardiman other than she was probably born in Pennsylvania about 1684. She died in childbirth on July 26, 1711. The infant son died three weeks later on August 16, 1711.

Marjorie Brown was the daughter of James Brown and Honor Clayton. This addendum also includes brief histories of both the Brown and Clayton Families. Marjorie was born about 1690 in Marcus Hook, Delaware County Pennsylvania. She married John Piggott in Concord, Chester County Pennsylvania on January 18, 1712/13.

John Piggott died in Chester County Pennsylvania on January 29, 1738. Marjorie Piggott died there two (?) weeks earlier on December 24, 1737.

The following is what I know about the four children of John Piggott and Rebecca Hardiman. All the children were born in Chester County Pennsylvania and their births were recorded in the minutes of the New Garden Monthly Meeting.

1. Mary Piggott: Mary Piggott was born on February 6, 1706. She married Thomas Williams in 1737. I have no other information.

2. Rebecca Piggott: Rebecca was born on October 1, 1707. She remained unmarried and died at the age of twenty two on February 17, 1729.

3. Hannah Piggott :Hannah was born on August 14, 1707. She married Samuel White in Nottingham on December 1, 1725. I have no other information.

4. Unnamed Son Piggott; This boy was born and his mother died in his childbirth. He lived only another three weeks and died in Chester County on August 16, 1711.

The following is what I know about the children of John Piggott and Marjorie Brown Piggott. All of these children were born in Cecil County Maryland and their births were recorded in the minutes of the Nottingham Monthly Meeting in Chester County Pennsylvania (actually located in Maryland, though claimed by Pennsylvania) where this Quaker family attended Church. (List with abridged biographies follow.)

1. James Piggott: Very little is known about James Piggott except that his birth was recorded in the Nottingham Monthly Meeting Minutes on January 16, 1713/4.

2. Margery Piggott: Marjorie, the first of that name, was born on August 30, 1715. Marjorie died on March 8, 1728/9. There was a second Marjorie born in 1734.

3. John Piggott: John was born April 18th, 1717. He married Rachel Reynolds on December 25, 1737 in Nottingham. I think he then went to Loudon County Virginia and attended the Goose Creek Meeting. He died on March 4, 1743/4.

4. Samuel Piggott: Samuel was born on August 11, 1718. He married Rebecca Bowen on June 8, 1744. He died on January 19, 1749/50. He moved to the New Garden Meeting in North Carolina.

5. Elizabeth Piggott: Elizabeth was born July 10, 1720. She married John Crumpton. She died on July 18, 1748.

6. Abigail Piggott: Abigail was born on January 30, 1721/2. She married out of union' and was dismissed by the Church at Nottingham on June 21, 1740.

7. Susannah Piggott: Susannah was born on March 13, 1723/4. She married Richard Kemp on January 29, 1746/7. She moved to the Hopewell, Virginia Monthly Meeting on August 17, 1745 and lived in Louden County. Hopewell Meeting closed and she was transferred to the Fairfax, Virginia Meeting on September 25, 1745. She died on September 11, 1781.

8. Jeremiah Piggott: Jeremiah was born on October 26, 1725 and died a month or two after his birth.

9. William Piggott: William Piggott was born on August 8, 1726. He was dismissed by the Nottingham Monthly Meeting on February 18, 1748/9 for he hath lately left these parts in a very dishonorable manner, without he knowledge of his creditors, to the scandal of truth and friends.' He skipped town. He married Sarah Pike in 1750 and died March 1, 1770.

10. Jeremiah Piggott: This second Jeremiah was born on October 26, 1730. He moved to the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County North Carolina on December 21, 1752. There he was married to Rachel Mayner on May 22, 1765. He died in North Carolina on November 3, 1778.

11. Benjamin Piggott: Benjamin Piggott was born on November 29, 1732. He went to the Cane Creek Meeting in North Carolina on August 17, 1754. He then married Mary Hadley there in 1757. He died April 26, 1818.

12. Margery Piggott: This second child named Margery was born on February 20, 1734/5. She also went to Cane Creek in 1753. I have no other information on this Margery.

13. Unnamed Son Piggott: There was also one other son that was not named. He was born on October 26, 1734 and died less than a week later on November 1st.

John Piggott [d. March 9, 1737/8 O.S. [March 20, 1738 N.S.][1] married Rebecca Hardiman.

He married second Margery Brown (ca. 1691 Cecil County, Maryland-February 24, 1737/8 O.S. [March 7, 1738 N.S.] Cecil County, Maryland) on March 18, 1713 O.S. [March 29, 1713 N.S.] at East Nottingham MM, Cecil County, Maryland.

They lived in Susquehanna Hundred, Cecil County. The births of John & Margery Pickett are listed in the East Nottingham MM records.[2] [3]

At the October 17, 1730 O.S. [October 28, 1730 N.S.] Nottingham Monthly Meeting, John Piggott and Joseph England were given 54 shillings that were collected to purchase four large vellum bound books of about 750 pages each in order to record Men's Meeting minutes, Women's Meeting minutes, marriage certificates, and births and deaths for Nottingham and Bush River.[4]

On January 15, 1747/8 O.S. [January 26, 1748 N.S.], John Piggott's son, Samuel, sold property, half of lot 108 in Charles Town, 4 years and 8 months time of a servant named Joseph Curlen. They buyers were Robert Williams and James Stevenson of Susguehanna Hundred. The proceeds from the sale were shared with Jeremiah, Benjamin, and Margery Piggott – children of the deceased John Piggott. (see Piggott Maryland Land Records).

The Piggotts originally came from France. In France, the surname was spelled quite differently; the original name was Picquette, which steams From the Old-French personal name Pic added by an -ot and occasionally an -et. The Picquettes left France and went to England with the famous William the Conqueror . William the Conqueror, who was the Duke of Normandy and was the great-grandson of the famous Viking 'Rollo', crossed the English Channel with 7000 men and became the great Norman conqueror of England. In 1066, at the battlefield of Hastings in Sussex County, William defeated the Anglo-Saxon claimant, thus uniting the country into a feudal monarch and ending Saxon rule forever . Consequently, French, which was William the Conqueror's native language and the language of Normandy, became the language of the English court . The Picquette lived peacefully in England for centuries. During this time period, the Picquette anglicized their name to Picot, which later became Piggott and Pickett. I have checked some of the many records available on England and have found several that date back to the eleventh century about the time of the Norman invasion of England. There was a Picot de Grantebrige in 1086 ; Pichot de Lacele circa 1155 ; Pigotus de Hutun ; Robertus filius Picot in 1166 ; Roger Picot in 1086 ; Robert Picot in 1140 through 1145 ; William Piket in 1177 ; Waubert Pyket in 1277 ; and Peter Picot, Pycot, Pygot in 1285 . The following are variants of our surname found in England: Pickett, Picot, Pikett, Pykett, Piggot, Piggott, Pigot, Pigott . According to the Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the word Picket comes from the French word piquet and from Middle French from the verb piquer--to prick, which is a direct descendant of picacare from Vulgar Latin . Furthermore, according to a dictionary of surnames, Pigott and Pigot are English variants of Pickett, which mean one whose face was pitted or pockmarked. The Piggotts lived happily in England, free from religious persecution to the time of King Henry VIII. Then, sometime after the death of King Henry VIII, his daughter the famous Queen "Bloody Mary", took over the crown and turned the nation back over to a Catholic country. Once again the persecution against them began, so many of them left England and went to Wales. After the death of Bloody Mary, Elizabeth took over the crown as Queen of England and once again restored England back to a Protestant nation. This was the time period known as the English Renaissance. The population of England was about five million people. The Piggotts surely took pleasure from partaking in activities of the time such as sports, entertainment, diversion and merrymaking--the very things that were so greatly discouraged upon under the rule of Queen Bloody Mary. Furthermore, in the early 1600s economic times soon hit hard for the common farmers, serfs and peasants, who had become restricted from the lands that their grandfathers had farmed centuries before. The lords of the lands sought after larger and quicker profits from the grazing of sheep for wool. These poor yeoman left their homes and sought refuge in large cities where industry thrived. Moreover, many formed trading companies and left England seeking to start a new life in the New World. John Piggott was born around 1680 in England. Sometime around the turn of the eighteenth century John Piggott left England and immigrated to America. Tradition has it that John Piggott was a close relative to the Royal Family, was closely associated with the throne of England and was a friend and associate of William Penn. Moreover, John Piggott settled in Pennsylvania. On March 14, 1705 at the Concord Monthly Meeting in Chester County Pennsylvania, John Piggott married Rebecca Hardiman, who was born around 1684. The Piggotts had three children: Mary, Rebecca, Hannah. It is not known what happened to Rebecca but in 1711 she died. On January 18, 1713, after having obtained clearance from the church, John Piggott remarried to Margery Brown, who was born in 1691 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Margery is the daughter of James and Honour (Clayton) Brown. The Piggotts had thirteen children: James, Margery, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Abigail, Susannah, Jeremiah, William, Jeremiah, Benjamin, and Margery. William Piggott, who is the son of John and Margery (Brown) Piggott, was born on June 8, 1726 in Pennsylvania. In 1750, William Piggott married Sarah Pike, who was born on Febuary 26, 1733 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Sarah is the daughter of John and Abigail (Overman) Pike.
