John was born in England, but traveled with his parents to Newbury as a young child. He married Mary Scullard in 1656. Her parents arrived in Newbury by 1637 and she was born there in January 1641/2. John and Mary remained in Newbury until 1663 and had their first three children there (two girls named Mary, the first dying in early infancy, and Rebecca). In 1663, while John was away on a fishing trio to Nantucket, there was an incident involving Mary and Dr. Henry Greenland. You can read the full story at this link: http://www.newenglandhistoricalsociety.com/henry-greenland-tries-to... Shortly after this event in 1663, John and Mary moved to Nantucket where they had five more children (John, Joseph, Hannah, Samuel, and Sarah). Around 1670, the family relocated again to an area of Cambridge that is now part of Arlington. John purchased about 200 acres including the old Cook's Mill. He rebuilt the mill on Mill Brook and operated the mill until his death in 1681. Although his death is recorded in Newbury, he seems to have been living in the Cambridge/Arlington area. Four more children were born in Cambridge (Benjamin, Esther/Hester, Henry, and Moses). Moses was born a few weeks after his father's death.
