Biography

John "Charter John" Stewart was born in 1682 in Edinburgh, Midlothian,Scotland<ref>https://archive.org/details/stewartclanmaga00incgoog</ref>. He was the son of Robert Stewart and his wife Jannette Forsythe and grandson of Walter Stewart of Perthshire. He moved with his parents and siblings to Aghadowey, County Londonderry, Ireland as part of the settlements program. He was known as "Charter John" and came to America with his wife Elizabeth in 1718, among the group which left Aghadowey, Ireland with Rev. Mr. Boyd. He was a carpenter, and one of the original settlers of Londonderry, NH. He never did come to Colrain, MA, but his wife, and probably his mother, are buried there. He arrived in Boston with his wife and several children, his mother, brother Robert, and Robert's two sons. His 1st wife Elizabeth Clark Stewart gave birth to their youngest son Samuel aboard ship in Boston Harbor. He may be related to James Stewart who came to Colrain, MA in 1742. But this is not certain. He passed away on 6 April 1741 in Londonderry, New Hampshire, British American Colonies.

Marriage

John "Charter John" Stewart was married to his 1st wife Elizabeth Clark about 1704 in Colerain, County Londonderry, Ireland.

There is no record of Elizabeth Clark Stewart after 1718. John Stewart was then married to his 2nd wife Elizabeth (Jean?) Forsythe about 1720 in the British American Colonies. The records are vague about his first wife as well as the second wife, who might be a cousin as his mother's maiden name is also Forsythe.
