John Everist Dies
At Clemons, Iowa
Former Rural Mail Carrier And
Randolph Resident Dies
Last Week In Iowa
John Everist, former resident of Randolph and
rural mail carrier here for sixteen years, was laid to
rest beside his wife and daughter in the local cemetery
Tuesday afternoon, following services held at the
Secord Mortuary. Rev. D. A. McCullough officiated,
the services being conducted at two o'clock p.m.
Mr. Everist was well known in Randolph
where he made his home from 1904 to 1920, during
which time he held a position as rural mail carrier for
Route 5, located mostly in Pierce county and now a
part of Route 3. Mr. Everist was the first carrier on'
Route 5, when the rural routes out of the local post
office were first established, and he held this position
without question until he was forced to retire because
of the rural-mail carriers' age law in 1920. At the time
of his resignation W. E. Casteel and Dave Allison of
this city were the other two regular carriers, along
with two temporary carriers.
Mr. Everist passed away during the early
hours of Sunday morning at the home of his sister,
Mrs. Albert Brackney, at Clemons, la., following a 5-

myacarditis.
John W. Everist was born November 1, 1853,
in Indiana, the son of Benjamin and Emily Hartman
Everist. When but a small boy his parents moved to
Iowa, settling in Bangor township. He was married to
Mary J. Grimes on November 24, 1887 and moved to
Dillon, la., where they made their home for nine years,
later moving to Clemons. In 1900 they moved to
Randolph where Mr. Everist was one of the five first
mail carriers, continuing in this line of work until being
pensioned.
Mrs. Everist died at Randolph on June 4,
1926, after which Mr. Everist moved to Clemons
making his home with his sister, Mrs. Brackney, and
spending some of the time with other relatives.
