John Winthrop, of Groton Manor

A note on the squires of Groton Manor: Any man in England owning an estate was the squire of the estate and had "Esq." appended to his name in correspondence and legal documents. The descriptive term "lord of the manor", when applied to a squire, does not imply that the squire has any other rank or title. He is not addressed as "Lord" or "Sir" unless he has a title. (JPR)

John Winthrop (b. 20 Jan 1545, d. 26 Jul 1613)

John Winthrop (son of Adam Winthrop and Agnes Sharp) was born 20 Jan 1545 in London,England and died 26 Jul 1613 in Aughadown, Co Cork, Ireland. He married Elizabeth Risby on the 6th Feb 1566 in London. She was only about 16. The marriage was not a happy one & the couple had an only child, Benjamin in 1582, before separating in 1584. John agreed to pay her 25 pounds a quarter for the rest of her life.

In about 1596 he emigrated to County Cork, Ireland.

He married Elizabeth Poulden, daughter of Thomas Powlden/Olden in County Cork, Ireland somewhere between 1596 & 1606, although the marriage was probably not legal as he was still really married to Elizabeth Risby [she also remarried but not until after the death of John]. With his second wife John had two daughters; Anne & Elizabeth [both mentioned in his 1613 will]

In the name of God. Amen. I John Winthroppe2 of Aghadowne3 in the Countye of Cork, gent, being in perfect helthe in body and good memory be to God therefore doe make and ordayne this my laste Will and Testament in manner and forme following First I bequeathe my Soul to Almightye God hopeing verelye to besaved by the deathe and passion of his Sonne Jesus Christe and my bodye to be buryed at the disposition of my Executrix. Then I give towards the reliefe of the poore people of the parish of Aghadowne aforesaid the somme of sixe pounds sterlinge to be distributed by the discretion of the aforesaid Executrix. Item I bequeath unto Adam Winthroppe of the Michells,4 the somme of tenn pounds sterling. Item I give to Elizabeth Winthroppe my daughter 220 pounds sterling and to my daughter Anne Winthroppe one hundred and fower score pounds sterling for their better preferment to be paid unto them and either of them at the daie of their marriage5 provided that they and eyther of them marye by the conseynt and to the lyking of their mother otherwyse my meaning is that they or shee that shall marrye without the consent of their mother shall have no parte of the foresaid Sommes as my gyfte, but do leave them to their fortunes and their mothers favor in that kinde. Item I give to Elizabeth my nowe Wyfe daughter of Thomas Powlden deceased all my houses goods and chattells whatsoever, my Ligasays and funerall expenses to be paid by her and allowed and Idoe finally make constitute ordayne and appoint my wife Elizabeth daughter to Thomas Powlden deceased my sole and absolute Executrix of this my laste Will and Testament and doe hereby revoke and disallow all other Wills and Testaments heretofore made or ordayned and doe hereby declare them to be absolutely voyde frustrate and of noe effecte. In witness whereof I have hereunto put my hande and Seale dated this eight and twentyeth day of March 1613. My meaning is that the tenn pounds I have bestowed on Adam Winthroppe and the sixe pounds which I have bestowed on the poor shall be paid within three months next after my decease.

2. Brother of Adam and uncle of John Winthrop. He married (I) Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Margery (Rosse) Risby of Thorpe Morieux, co. Suffolk, by whom he had one child, Benjamin, who died in boyhood. After separating from her he married (2) Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Powlden of Rathgogan, co. Cork. The validity of the marriage is doubtful. By her he had John, died unmarried in 1634, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne. The first wife married for her second husband Reynold Braunch in 1617 and died in 1637. The second wife also remarried, Thomas Nott, gent., of co. Surrey and later of co. Cork. Muskett,25, 73.

3. Aghadown, or Aughadown, is a parish in the barony of West Carbery, co. Cork, and province of Munster, on the north bank of the Ilen River.

4. Son of William and Elizabeth Winthrop and cousin of John Winthrop. He went from London to the Michells, near Bandon, co. Cork. Muskett, 25.

5. Elizabeth married Peregrin Banastre who was in the Irish Parliament of 1639, representing Cloghnakilty Borough. Anne married Henry Hoskins, gentleman. Muskett, 25; Parliamentary Papers, 1878, LXII, pt. 2, 610.

In the name of god Amen. The 20th daye of September Anno Domini 1562, I Adam Wyntrope of Groton in the Countie of Suffolk, gentleman and late clothworker and Cittezen of London, being whole of mynde and in good and parfect remembrance, thanks be given to almightie god, doe ordayne and make this my presente testamente and laste will in manner and forme followinge ; revoking and disannulling all other willes & testaments heretofore by me made, or caused to be made, first I bequeath my soule to almightie God, and my boddie to be buried in the parrish churche yarde of Groton aforesaide. Item, I doe give to the poore people of Groton ten pounds to be given and distributed to the most needest by my executors or Administrators. Item I do give unto John Wyntropp my sonne, the leaoe and whole terme of yeres of my mancon house Wherein I nowe doe dwell, wholy as I have yt by leace, withall the buildings, Orchardes, gardens, tenements with th'appurtenncs, to the saide John, to his heires and assigners. Item I doe giue and bequeath vnto John Wyntropp and to Adam Wyntropp my sonnes, vj* a peece at theire age of 21 yeres, to be payed yerely vnto them and vnto eyther of them by the handes •f Agnes my wife during her naturall life. Whiche saide some I will yt be levied and taken yerely ate of all my landes and tennements, goodes and cattails, bequeathed to Agnes my wife. Item I doe giue vnto Alice Wyntropp my daughter threescore and six poundes thirteene shillings and fower pence which is in the handes of Willm Wyntropp my sonne as yt appereth by his bill obligatorie. Item I doe giue vnto my daughter Bridget other threescore and six poundes thirtiene shillings and fower pence whiche is also in the handes of the saide Willm, delivred to hym by my wief, as also yt doth appere by his bill obligatorie ; whiche saide some I will yt be payed to the saide Alice and Bridget at the daye of theire marriage, or at theire severall age of 21 yeres, if they be not married before.
