About Joseph Endicott

Note: The fifth son of Dr. Zerubbabel Endecott, Joseph moved to NewJersey in 1698 and settles in Northampton, Burlington Co., New Jersey. He inherited considerable property from his father, and in 1735 at the death of his brother, Benjamin, came into possession of part of the Topsfield farm in Mass. Why he located there is not known, but Burlington Co., is in the southern part of West New Jersey, which was largely Quaker. Whether he became a Quaker before his marriage to Hannah or as a result of that marriage is also not known, but New Jersey records lists Joseph Endecott among those Friends (Quakers) who conscientiously objected to joining the militia. It is somewhat ironic that he became a Qualer, when his grandfather, Gov. John Endecott, so opposed them in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

N.J. Archieves service I VO.II, pg. 578 states "Pen. Gazette advertises sale by 3 sheriff comm. Attachment of Joseph Indicott, on 6655 singles on house of Issace Howell, to be sold at Long Bridge or Joseph Indicott's house near Mt. Holly, for debt." (Newspaper extracts Volumes, Sept. 1739. Pa. Magazine of History, Pa. Hist. Society, Pa, 1883, Vol. 7, pg. 249, 247 & 369: "The Friends Meetings in Burlington, N.J., ", by Bummers, also mentions Joseph Endecote.

Joseph only gave his son, Joseph II, the sum of 5 shillings as his inheritance. "I say 5 shillings and no more." Joseph II had married "out of meeting," since the Gilliam family were not members of the Quaker Church.
