In 1775, at the age of 82, Joseph served as a Minute Man in the Revolutionary War.

Joseph Prudden was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ., in 1744, and became an elder in 1748. Before the American Revolution, Negro slavery existed in New Jersey. Joseph Prudden had his slaves baptised. The Reverend Timothy Johns of the Morristown church, in his records of baptisms, gives the following: "1742 March 27, Joseph Prudden's negro's child Violet, 1747, Jan. 15, Joseph Prudden and wife stood for negro's child Titus; 1751, June 21, Deacon Joseph Prudden and wife servants of ch. Daniel.


Joseph Prudden (son of John Prudden and Grace Prudden) was born Abt. 1692 in Milford, New Haven, CT, and died September 25, 1776 in Morristown, NJ. He married Joanna Lyon on 1716, daughter of Benjamin Lyon and Bethia Condit (Lindsley).
