Served in Montfort's Company in NC as a private for 9 months starting in July, 20, 1778 in the Rev. War. He was a sharpshooter who was stationed to guard the Delaware River for G. George Washington. Was awarded a land grant for his service. It was located in the Powell Valley of Claiborne, County, TN. He left Tennassee in 1830 for Missouri.

Joseph Powell and Hanna (Jewson) Powell were of Welsh ancestry. They were Quakers, though Joseph fought in the American Revolution. <ref> Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Volume III </ref>
Joseph is buried in the Six Mile Church Cemetery, in Sibley, Jackson County, Missouri. <ref>Find A Grave Memorial# 65393823.</ref>
