Joseph J. Welle was born on 10 Jul 1877 in Spring Hill, Minn. He was the 5th of the 10 children born to Christoph & Elizabeth (Primus) Welle.
On 09 Jun 1903, when Joseph J Welle was 25 years old, he married Anna Schoenberg, the 18 year old daughter of Martin & Katherine (Gerads) Schoenberg, in St. Michael's Church in Spring Hill, MN.
The couple farmed in Section 17 of Grove Township, 1 mile north of Meire Grove, MN. This farm was originally owned by Joe's maternal grandparents - John J. & Catherine (Nathe) Primus. Around 1890, Elizabeth & Christohp Welle purchased the farm from her parents and after they married in June 1903, Joe & Anna would take over the Primus family farm.
Joe & Anna had 13 children, 4 of which died in infancy / childhood and eldest son, Joseph H, died in 1945 when his vehicle collided with train in Greenwald. The children of Joe & Anna Welle are:
