About Judge William Holcombe Bolling

Judge William Holcombe Bolling

The father of U.S. First Lady Edith White Wilson (Bolling)

Judge Bolling was educated in private schools and the University of Virginia. He read law under Judge Brockenborough of Virginia.

Having suffered from the impoverishment of the South, resulting from the American Civil War, he started life with rather a poorer outlook, financially, than most of his ancestors. However, he had a good mind; and with the courage of his ancestors he didn't hesitate to face the world. Soon after the Civil War, he moved his family to Wytheville, Virginia; a little town at the base of mountains of southwestern Virginia. Here he resumed the practice of his legal profession.

He was a lawyer of high standing at the Wytheville bar, and a man of most distinguished personality. For a number of years he was Judge of the County Court of Wythe County, Virginia. (Source: "Our Kin" by Ackerly & Parker, C. J. Carrier Company, Harrisonburg, VA. 1981)
