About Katherine Howell

Katherine Howell, wife of Thomas Howell, of Cooper's Creek,
parents unknown. Seen as daughter of Henry Lakin and also as daughter of William Thomas without supporting evidence.

"Thomas Howell was born about 1635 in Haxleston, County of Stafford, England; resided Tamworth, Co. Warwick, England. He married about 1659 in Haxleston, Katharine, whose surname is not known; she was born about 1639 in Haxleston. Thomas embarked, 31 Aug. 1682, at Deal, England on the ship "Welcome" with sons and daughters, arriving at new Castle "on the Delware" on 27 Oct. 1682. William Penn was also on board the ship. Katharine did not accompany Thomas to America; she came to America after 1687. Their church affiliation was the Church of England. Thomas must have died before 8 Mar. 1687 on the N. Side of Cooper's Creek in Waterford (now Delaware) Twp., NJ; his will was probated at Gloucester (now Camden) Co., NJ on 1 Nov. 1687. Katharine died between 17 Aug. 1695, when her will was dated, and 4 Oct. 1695 when her will was probated at Philadelphia, PA. Thomas was a Proprietor and Planter of large areas of land in New Jersey. He and Katharine had 5 children all born in Haxleston, England."

As Katherine outlived her husband and her reputed daughter, Sarah was married out of Abingdon MM, perhaps the family became Quaker after Katherine became a widow... Her husband (to my knowledge) has no confirmation of having been Quaker before arriving in New Castle and West Jersey ~• MMvB curator 4/2016

Katherine was born about 1640 in England & married Thomas Howell probably in Tamworth, Warwick, England. The will of her husband clearly indicates that she did not accompany him to America. Her son Mordecai went to England in 1687 on estate matters, and later returned, bringing with him his mother Katharine, who took up her residence in Philadelphia where she died in September 1695.

Sep 29 1690 Daniel Howell of near Philadelphia, son and heir of Thomas Howell of Cooper's Creek, Gloucester, Co. dec'd to Katharine, widow of said Thomas Howell, for the preceding 88 acres pg 20 Gloucester Deeds. No 3.

On 29 Jul 1693 Kathrine Howell of Philadelphia, widow of Thomas Howell, deeded to Henry Johnson, late of Cape May, now of Philadelphia, mariner, for a house and lot of 88 acres on Cooper's Creek, Gloucester Co. adjoining Moses Lakin. Pg 17 No. 3 (Henry Johnson married her daughter Miriam, it being a part of the estate on which her son Mordecai then resided)

20 July 1695 Katherine Howell deeded to James Robinson a lot in the City of Philadelphia. This lot he sold on 11 Sep 1699 for 40 pounds and the deed describes him as James Robinson late of Phil. but now a resident in the County of Gloucester, Province of West New Jersey, yeoman (Phil.
