Company slave Koddo

Profile source documents:

To ALL interested parties: please add as much additional clarifying info/evidence as possible so we can build up a clear picture of the facts surrounding Koddo.

DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE

The only clear primary documentary evidence found to date for Company slave Koddo is that of her baptising 2 children (maybe twins?) on 6/9/1665: “de moeder Koddo, diens kinderen Maria, Derkje

ORIGIN & ALIASES

Claim: that Koddo was from Guinea (“Marij van Gene and Prodo (Prede) van Gene [Koddo] sign a notarial declaration (11 August 1696). Upham cites CA: 1/STB 18/153. The two women are described as 'van Gene' - a spelling not uncommonly used for the provenance of the 'Guinea' slaves.")

Claim: that Koddo was written in various records as Cladoor, Pladoor, Prodo van Gene - she is supposedly the only person who fits the profile to be Koddo. She was supposedly entered in the 1692 opgaafrol as Pladoor [eGGSA: 1692 Monsterrol, p119: Abraham van Guinea en Pladoer], and emancipated as Cladoor on 2 Jan 1687. [Resolutions of the Cape of Good Hope, ref. C. 18, pp. 98-99.Thu 2 Jan 1687] No origins are mentioned for Pladoer or Cladoor and no obvious connection made to Company slave Koddo.

In http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/RemarkableWriting/UL01WhatCantBeCured... Koddo is stated as also being the same person as Sara de Waster, and mother of Jannetje van de Caep. No source is referenced.

It is not immediately obvious why Koddo MUST be the same person as Cladoor/Pladoor/Prodo van Gene and Sara de Waster.

MOTHER OF WILLEM SCHALCK VAN DER MERWE’S DAUGHTER MARIA? (candidate relationship)

It is speculated that Koddo may have been the mother of Willem Schalck van der Merwe’s daughter Maria. Maria was a common name. No documentary evidence has been uncovered yet that verifies that Willem Schalck van der Merwe’s child Maria by an unnamed slave was Company slave Koddo's child Maria.

According to Stamouers: “Willem het "n dogter gehad met "n slavin wat Simon van der Stel aan hom geskenk het, die kind se naam was Maria. Hierdie slavin was in 1686 vrygestel (Attestasie 1664 in C 326 pp 478-9, p 6 en 27). Maria het die stammoeder geword van die Heyns familie, sy trou in 1696 met Paulus Heyns.” [Sources: Hoge, Personalia of the Germans at the Cape, p 161. as well as Van der Merwe, Jan. "Willem Schalkszoon van der Merwe - "n Biografiese Ekskursie" Familia XVI 1979 no 1] This child Maria’s MOTHER is not named in these source documents.

If she was given to van der Merwe by Simon van der Stel, she would have been a privately owned and not a Company slave like Koddo. Of the slaves that arrived in the Cape in 1658 from Angola and Guinea, 60 were allocated to the slave lodge (likely incl Koddo), 172 slaves were sent on to Batavia, 79 were sold to company officials and 51 to vryburgers. Hence the Company slaves were different people from those sold to company officials. Unless specific evidence exist for this being factual it seems unlikely that Koddo a company slave would have been given to van der Merwe by van der Stel.

CHILD: ISABELLA ~16/9/1691 Koddo’s child? (candidate relationship)

It seems unlikely that Isabella was Company slave Koddo’s child. According to the VOC baptismal policy which was based on the decisions made during the Synod of Dordt in 1618, all slaves born in the slave lodge HAD to be baptised. (Paths to Freedom: Manumission in the Atlantic World by Rosemary Brana-Shute, Randy J. Sparks, p106, 2009). So if Isabella was the child of Company slave Koddo, then one would expect her to have been baptised as a child already, not as an adult only in 1691.

More on the 1658 West-African slaves:

In 1658 two large groups of slaves from West-Africa were brought to the Cape. On 28 March 174 slaves arrived from Angola in the Amersfoort, and on 6 May the Hasselt arrived with 228 slaves from Popo, Guinea. (Bauermeester EM, Die Kaapse slawe in kultuurhistoriese perspektief-1652-1838, 2002, MA dissertation, University of Pretoria, http://repository.up.ac.za/handle/2263/29316 ):

Of these West-African slaves, 60 were allocated to the slave lodge, 172 were sent on to Batavia, 79 were sold to company officials and 51 to vryburgers. (W Blommaert, Het invoeren van de slavernij aan de Kaap, argief jaarboek vir Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis, 1938)

More information about her can be found in the First Fifty Years project online: http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g7/p7961.htm

She arrived enslaved at the Cape on board the Hasselt from Popo, Benin, amongst 220 slaves acquired in Benin - and described by Jan van Riebeeck as

bijsonder fraey, cloeck ende lustich volcq", i.e. goodlooking, strong and energetic.

6 September 1665 she was a slave owned by the VOC at the Cape

=====================================================================================================================================================================

Sy was 'n slavin van die V.O.C. [1]
