Lady Elizabeth Fane is the daughter of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland and Mary Mildmay.1 She married, firstly, Sir John Cope, 3rd Bt., son of Sir William Cope, 2nd Bt..1 She married, secondly, William Cope.1 Her married name became Cope.1

Elizabeth was born about 1610 in England. She was the daughter of Francis Fane 1st Earl of Westmorland and Mary Mildmay, who was the daughter and sole heiress of Sir Anthony Mildmay of Apethorpe Palace Northamptonshire, England. From what is known, Elizabeth was one of thirteen children, and was probably born at Apethorpe Palace Northamptonshire, England.

Elizabeth's mother, Mary was a significant author of spiritual guidance and a writer of letters. She wrote a book called - 'Book of Advices to the Children'. It appears that Elizabeth followed in her mother's footsteps, regarding writing. She kept a commonplace book in which she recorded her marriages and the births of her children and grandchildren.[1]

From the information found, Apethorpe Palace was their family residence, as well as Hanwell Castle, in Oxfordshire, England, which was the home of the Cope family.

Elizabeth married twice. Her first marriage was to Sir John Cope, 3rd Baronet of Hanwell. They were married on the 14 February 1631 in Westminster London, England. The couple had 5 children that are known of.

Elizabeth's second marriage was to William Cope. They were married on the 3 January 1643 in Brewerne Chapel Northamptonshire, England. From what is known the couple had 6 children.

2. William Cope born 12 February 1646, Brewerne Northamptonshire, England. Died in infancy.
3. Elizabeth Cope born 16 November 1647, Tangley Hampshire, England.
4. Richard Cope born 30 December 1648, Tangley Hampshire, England. Died in infancy.
5. Rachell Cope born 3 June 1650, Tangley Hampshire, England.
6. William Cope born 4 September 1651, Brewerne Northamptonshire, England.

She passed away in 1669 and is buried in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Icomb, Gloucestershire (in the Cotswolds), England.[2]

Research Notes

It is believed that Elizabeth was born at Apethorpe Palace in Northamptonshire England. FS has recorded her birth as the 3 August, and her christening, 23 August 1608, at Apethorpe Northamptonshire, England, however, there are no actual records. No marriage or birth/baptism records have been found, for Elizabeth Cope, except, a marriage record was found for her daughter, Elizabeth. She married Thomas Escourt Esq.,on the 12 June 1665 at Icomb Gloucesthershire, England.

Brewerne is a village located in the county of Peterborough Cambridgeshire, England. Peterborough was part of Northamptonshire until 1974, when the county boundaries changed.

From the book, "Baronetage of England," printed for John Stockdale, published 1806: Sir John Cope, eldest son of William Cope, 2nd Baroent, married (1) Mary, the daughter of Sir John Walter, Knight, who died leaving him with one daughter, Anne. He married (2) Lady Elizabeth, daughter of Francis, Earl of Westmorland. the had three sons -- Anthony, William (who died young), and John -- and two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth.

According to information passed on to me by Ian Caldwell, in Dec 2001: "Lady Elizabeth Fane (1610-1669), daughter of Sir Francis Fane and Mary Mildmay, married (1) Sir John Cope, third baronet, and after his death, (2) Colonel William Cope of Icomb. Her second husband obtained the Manor of Icomb, near Stow on the Wold, in 1654. A memorial plaque on the wall of the south transept of the parish church of St.Mary the Virgin at Icomb commemorates these two and at the bottom of the lengthy inscription are these words: "Lady Elizabeth deceased ye 10th day of October Anno Dom 1669. The sd. Will Cope dyed the 7th day of August 1691, who left 33 pounds per annum to poores uses in Icomb and Stow out of lands in his manor of Icomb, Anno Aetas Sue 79."

Colonel William Cope's father, Richard Cope, was married to Anne Walton, the sister of Sir William Walton of Wimbledon, a name that trips off the tongue. Colonel William's grandfather, Sir Anthony Cope of Hanwell (1548?-1614), was an MP and High Sheriff of Oxford and his portrait hangs at Knowle in Kent.
