Louis E. Tahmahkera
Indiahoma (Staff) – Funeral for Louis E. Tahmahkera, 65, who died Monday from injuries sustained in a traffic accident the same day near Randlett, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Post Oak Mennonite Brethren Church here.
Rev. Robert Chaat and Rev. Sherwood Tsotigh, pastor of the Indian Methodist Church of Cache, will officiate. Burial will be in the Indian Tribal Cemetery, Cache.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in Huddleston's Funeral Home, Lawton.
Mr. Tahmahkera was born Dec. 7, 1909 in Cache. He was the first Indian to graduate from Cache High School. He had been employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the past 34 years. In 1937 he began work with the bureau in Anadarko and had been stationed in Kansas, and most recently Lawton.
From 1946 to 1947, Mr. Tahmahkera worked in a shipyard for the War Department in Marseilles, France after which he returned to work for the bureau in Anadarko.
He was presented a Superior Performance Award from the bureau in 1960, and the Superior Service Award and Meritorious Service Award from the Department of Interior, the latter on April 13, 1977. He had also received a cash award for a suggestion in 1967.
Mr. Tahmahkera was a member of the Comanche County welfare board of directors and the Comanche Reformed Church, Lawton.
Survivors include a son, Morrison; a daughter, Mrs. Laverna Hoahwah; and a brother, Vance, all of Indiahoma, and a sister, Mrs. Sophia Mahsetky, Apache.
