About Lillian Victoria Norman

Lillian was the was the 11th child of Lars and Betsy Nordstrom. She was born in Sprague,
probably at the home on the former John Hebel property on Jan. 19, 1914. Her growing
up experience with the older siblings being Florence (3) Beda (8), John (11), Julia (16),
Louis (17) and Sam (18) would have well established farming at the new quarter and
fishing out the base at Reed River. Looking out the window to the east were three or more
giant pine well over a hundred feet tall. I low meadow to the north and the fields work to
the west of the meadow. Her siblings would have been very familiar with their surrounding
and would have had a watchful eye. Bear, deer and other animals would have been very
common sightings on the property.
In 1924, Betsey passed away, and Lars, I am sure must have been beside himself, now
left with a 4-year old Sophie, a 7-year old Emanuel, a 10-year old Lillian, a 13-year old
Florence. Breda was 19. In a decision that could not have been easy he decided to send
Sophie and Lillian to live at Betsy’s brother Martin Nelson in Roseau. Emanuel was sent
to live with Betsy’s brother Peter. Sadly, a year later Beda passed away at just 20 years
old. Lillian and Sophia were both raised by Martin and never did return to the Nordstrom
home. Emanuel, my dad stayed with his Uncle Peter until returned to Sprague about two
years later. Martin put Lillian through school in Roseau and afterwards, nurses training.
